Night Waltz 1- The Sun Won't Set
Mrs. Anderssen
The sun sits low,
Diffusing its usual glow.
Five o'clock,
Twilight...
Vespers sound,
And it's six o'clock,
Twilight
All around.
Quintet:
But the sun sits low,
As low as it's going to go.
Mr. Erlansen:
Eight o'clock...
Mr. Lindquist:
Twilight...
Women:
How enthralling!
Mr. Erlansen:
It's nine o'clock...
Mr. Lindquist:
Twilight...
Women:
Slowly crawling
Towards--
Mr. Erlansen:
Ten o'clock...
Mr. Lindquist:
Twilight...
Women:
Crickets calling...
Quintet:
The vespers ring,
The nightingale's waiting to sing,
The rest of us wait on a string.
Perpetual sunset
Is rather an unset-
Tling thing.
The sun won't set,
It's fruitless to hope or to fret,
It's dark as it's going to get.
The hands on the clock turn,
But don't sing a nocturne
Just yet.
Vals Nocturno 1- El Sol no se Pondrá
Sra. Anderssen
El sol se pone bajo,
Difundiendo su brillo habitual.
Son las cinco,
Anochecer...
Suena el víspero,
Y son las seis,
Anochecer
Por todas partes.
Quinteto:
Pero el sol se pone bajo,
Tan bajo como va a llegar.
Sr. Erlansen:
Son las ocho...
Sr. Lindquist:
Anochecer...
Mujeres:
¡Qué fascinante!
Sr. Erlansen:
Son las nueve...
Sr. Lindquist:
Anochecer...
Mujeres:
Poco a poco avanzando
Hacia--
Sr. Erlansen:
Son las diez...
Sr. Lindquist:
Anochecer...
Mujeres:
Los grillos llaman...
Quinteto:
El víspero suena,
El ruiseñor espera para cantar,
El resto de nosotros esperamos en vilo.
La puesta de sol perpetua
Es más bien una cosa inquietante.
El sol no se pondrá,
Es inútil esperar o preocuparse,
Está tan oscuro como va a estar.
Las manecillas del reloj avanzan,
Pero aún no entonan un nocturno
Por ahora.
