Triumph of the Defeated

Alfredo Zitarrosa

Triunfo de los vencidos

(Triunfo)

Éste es el triunfo, madre,
de los vencidos;
de los que nada tienen,
de los sufridos.

Nunca tuvieron nada,
menos cobijo;
sosteniendo la suerte
de algún caudillo.

Éste es el triunfo, madre,
que canto y grito;
por tanto gaucho muerto
desconocido.

Le hablaron de pelea,
probó el cuchillo;
agarró sus cacharpas,
sonriendo al hijo.

Éste es el triunfo, madre,
de los perdidos,
vueltos tierra del llano,
agua del río,
remolino de polvo,
flor de espartillo;
éste es el triunfo, madre,
de los vencidos.

Triumph of the Defeated

(Triumph)

This is the triumph, mother,
of the defeated;
of those who have nothing,
of the suffering.

They never had anything,
less shelter;
holding the fate
of some leader.

This is the triumph, mother,
that I sing and shout;
for so many dead gauchos
unknown.

They were told about fighting,
they tested the knife;
they grabbed their ponchos,
smiling at their son.

This is the triumph, mother,
of the lost ones,
turned into the land of the plains,
water of the river,
dust whirlwind,
espartillo flower;
this is the triumph, mother,
of the defeated.
