Gabriela of the Dove House

Ángel Parra

Gabriela del palomar

Un perrito que yo tuve
recorrió Chile de a pie,
empezando por Arica,
terminando en Chiloé.

Iquique lo vio primero,
Antofagasta después,
Atacama y otras partes
del norte que le diré.

Conoció del Norte Grande
minerales salitreras,
al llegar al Valle del Elqui
tuvo su primera pena.

Le contaron que una estrella
que alumbraba ese lugar
se llevó la flor más bella,
Gabriela del palomar.

Pobre perrito andariego,
mala suerte lo alumbró,
se cansaron sus patitas
y el viaje se terminó.

Gabriela of the Dove House

I had a little dog
who walked all through Chile,
starting in Arica,
ending in Chiloé.

Iquique saw him first,
Antofagasta next,
Atacama and other places
in the north I’ll mention.

He got to know the Great North,
mining and saltpeter,
upon reaching the Elqui Valley
he faced his first heartbreak.

They told him of a star
that shone in that place
that took the prettiest flower,
Gabriela of the dove house.

Poor little wandering dog,
bad luck lit his way,
his little paws got tired
and the journey came to an end.
