The Chestnut and the Dew

Antonio Aguilar

El Alazán y El Rocío

Un 19 de marzo
Presente lo tengo yo
El rosillo de los pobres
En San Fernando corrió

Los caballos que corrieron
No eran grandes ni eran chicos
El rosillo de los pobres
El alazán de los ricos

Gritan los de Mocorito
Con talegas de dinero
Aquí sobran diez mil pesos
Al Alazán por ligero

La carrera de los hombres
Los ricos contra los pobres

Contestan los de Bamoa
Basta de tanta alharaca
Se nos acabó el dinero
Nos quedan bueyes y vacas

Como a las 11:40
Se arrancan del partidero
Como a las 50 varas
Se quedó atrás el ligero

Ya se llevan al rosillo
Se lo llevan pa' la sierra
Anda vete desgraciado
Anda robar a tu tierra

The Chestnut and the Dew

On March 19th
I remember it well
The little horse of the poor
Ran in San Fernando

The horses that raced
Were neither big nor small
The little horse of the poor
The chestnut of the rich

The folks from Mocorito shout
With bags full of cash
Here we have ten grand
For the chestnut, so fast

The race of the men
The rich against the poor

The folks from Bamoa respond
Enough with all this fuss
We’ve run out of money
We’ve got oxen and cows left

Around 11:40
They take off from the start
About 50 yards in
The fast one fell behind

They’re taking the little horse
They’re taking him to the mountains
Come on, you bastard
Go steal from your own land
