In some countries even today police officers may search a person's home or office for evidence of wrongdoing, see your property and arrest him whenever they see fit.
In the United States on the other hand the Fourth Amendment protects the individual and his property from unreasonable search and seizure by officers of the law.
Double Jeopardy, the Fifth Amendment also guarantees the individual that he will not be tried before a federal court more than once for the same crime.

A knock at the door whether by day or night, as a prelude to a search without authority of law but solely on the authority of police, is inconsistent with the conception of human rights, enshrined in the history of basic constitutional documents of English speaking peoples.
Although the sanctity of ones privacy against illegal intrusion is one of the most important basic rights in our Constitution, experiences show that such intrusions occur at the hands of overzealous police officers.

Freedom of speech and freedom of press; the right to speak his mind is close to the heart of every American, the constitution prohibits most forms of censorship over the press and speechmakers. The argument against censorship is clear: no government official should be permitted to dictate what ideas or beliefs we are entitled to hear or believe. Both good and evil should be averted by more speech and not enforced silence.
Similarly while a person is free to make speeches on public streets he may be prevented from doing so when he uses a loud or raucous amplifier, which disturbs the public tranquility.

En algunos países, incluso hoy en día, los oficiales de policía pueden registrar la casa u oficina de una persona en busca de pruebas de delitos, ver sus propiedades y arrestarlo cuando les parezca conveniente.
En cambio, en los Estados Unidos, la Cuarta Enmienda protege al individuo y su propiedad de registros y confiscaciones irrazonables por parte de los oficiales de la ley.
La Doble Incriminación, la Quinta Enmienda también garantiza al individuo que no será juzgado ante un tribunal federal más de una vez por el mismo delito.

Un golpe en la puerta ya sea de día o de noche, como preludio de una búsqueda sin autoridad legal, sino únicamente por la autoridad de la policía, es inconsistente con la concepción de los derechos humanos, consagrados en la historia de los documentos constitucionales básicos de los pueblos de habla inglesa.
Aunque la sacralidad de la privacidad contra intrusiones ilegales es uno de los derechos básicos más importantes en nuestra Constitución, las experiencias muestran que tales intrusiones ocurren a manos de oficiales de policía excesivamente celosos.

La libertad de expresión y la libertad de prensa; el derecho a expresar su opinión está cerca del corazón de cada estadounidense, la constitución prohíbe la mayoría de formas de censura sobre la prensa y los oradores. El argumento contra la censura es claro: ningún funcionario gubernamental debería tener permitido dictar qué ideas o creencias tenemos derecho a escuchar o creer. Tanto el bien como el mal deben ser evitados con más palabras y no con silencio impuesto.
Del mismo modo, si bien una persona es libre de hacer discursos en las calles públicas, puede ser impedido de hacerlo cuando utiliza un amplificador ruidoso o estridente, que perturba la tranquilidad pública.
