I Adore Thee Devoutly (Latin)

Canto Católico

Adoro Te Devote (Latim)

Adoro te devote, latens Deitas
Quae sub his figuris vere latitas
Tibi se cor meum totum subiicit
Quia te contemplans totum deficit
Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur
Sed auditu solo tuto creditur
Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius
Nil hoc verbo Veritatis verius
In cruce latebat sola Deitas
At hic latet simul et humanitas

Ambo tamen credens atque confitens
Peto quod petivit latro paenitens
Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor
Deum tamen meum te confiteor
Fac me tibi semper magis credere
In te spem habere, te diligere
O memoriale mortis Domini!
Panis vivus, vitam praestans homini!

Praesta meae menti de te vivere
Et te illi semper dulce sapere
Pie pellicane, Iesu Domine
Me immundum munda tuo sanguine
Cuius una stilla salvum facere
Totum mundum quit ab omni scelere
Iesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio
Oro fiat illud quod tam sitio
Ut te revelata cernens facie
Visu sim beatus tuae gloriae
Amén

I Adore Thee Devoutly (Latin)

I devoutly adore you, hidden Deity
Who beneath these figures truly lies hidden
To you my heart submits itself completely
Because in contemplating you everything falls short
Sight, touch, taste are all deceived in you
But hearing alone is safely believed
I believe whatever the Son of God has said
Nothing is more true than this word of Truth
On the cross only the Deity was hidden
But here the humanity is also hidden

Yet believing and confessing both
I seek what the repentant thief sought
I do not see the wounds as Thomas did
But I confess that you are my God
Make me always believe more in you
Have hope in you, love you
O memorial of the Lord's death!
Living bread, giving life to man!

Grant that my soul may live on you
And always taste you sweetly
O loving Pelican, Lord Jesus
Cleanse me, a sinner, in your blood
One drop of which can free
The entire world of all its sins
Jesus, whom I now see veiled
I pray that what I so desire may come to pass
That by seeing you revealed face to face
I may be blessed with the vision of your glory
Amen
