The Cover Photo

Chico Buarque

A Foto da Capa

O retrato do artista quando moço
Não é promissora, cândida pintura
É a figura do larápio rastaqüera
Numa foto que não era para capa
Uma pose para câmera tão dura
Cujo foco toda lírica solapa

Era rala a luz naquele calabouço
Do talento a clarabóia se tampara
E o poeta que ele sempre se soubera
Claramente não mirava algum futuro
Via o tira da sinistra que rosnara
E o fotógrafo frontal batendo a chapa

É uma foto que não era para capa
Era a mera contracara, a face obscura
O retrato da paúra quando o cara
Se prepara para dar a cara a tapa

The Cover Photo

The artist's portrait when he was young
Isn't a promising, pure painting
It's the image of a petty thief, a loser
In a photo that wasn't meant for the cover
A pose for the camera so stiff
Whose focus completely undermines the lyricism

The light was dim in that dungeon
The talent's skylight was blocked
And the poet he always knew he was
Clearly wasn't looking at any future
He saw the cop from the shadows that growled
And the photographer up front snapping the shot

It's a photo that wasn't meant for the cover
It was just the flip side, the dark face
The portrait of fear when the guy
Prepares to take a hit and face the music
