They that have power to hurt and will do none,
That do not do the thing they most do show,
Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,
Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow,
They rightly do inherit heaven's graces
And husband nature's riches from expense;
They are the lords and owners of their faces,
Others but stewards of their excellence.
The summer's flower is to the summer sweet,
Though to itself it only live and die,
But if that flower with base infection meet,
The basest weed outbraves his dignity:
For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds;
Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.

Los que tienen el poder de herir y no lo hacen,
Que no hacen lo que más muestran,
Quienes, moviendo a otros, son como piedra,
Inmóviles, fríos y lentos a la tentación,
Ellos correctamente heredan las gracias del cielo
Y administran las riquezas de la naturaleza sin gasto;
Son los señores y dueños de sus rostros,
Los demás solo administradores de su excelencia.
La flor del verano es dulce para el verano,
Aunque solo viva y muera para sí misma,
Pero si esa flor se encuentra con una infección vil,
La maleza más baja desafía su dignidad:
Porque las cosas más dulces se vuelven más amargas por sus acciones;
Los lirios que se infectan huelen mucho peor que las malas hierbas.
