The Test

Elixir Worship

You called me one night
I said: Here I am
You promised me a son
When Sarah and I were old

Then Isaac came to us
The child we waited for
I held him in my arms
The promise I had prayed for

Then You said: Take your son
The one you love, and go
What will I tell Sarah
When I return alone?

Why give me this child
If You will take him away?
Is this the test You gave me?
What am I meant to say?

He took Isaac up the mountain
The son he waited for
The wood was on his shoulders
The fire and knife he bore

Father, where is the lamb?
God will provide
He walked beside his only son
With tears he tried to hide

We left the men behind
And climbed the mountain road
Isaac carried all the wood
I carried what I owed

Father, where is the lamb?
His question cut me deep
I said: God will provide it
And prayed my soul could keep

I built the altar there
I laid the wood below
Is this the son You promised?
Is this where I let go?

I raised the knife above him
But heaven called my name
Abraham, Abraham
Then everything had changed

Do not touch the child
Do not touch the child
Do not touch the child

A ram was caught by its horns
I gave it in his place
The Lord had made a way for me
When I could not see His grace

Father where is the lamb?
God will provide
He walks beside his only son
With tears he tried to hide

What will I tell Sarah?
What will I tell Sarah?

The Lord provided
