Half of the Moon

Ella Veymont

The curtains stayed half open
Moonlight stopped at the floor
Your coat hung on the same chair
The room knew us by heart

You told stories in careful pieces
I answered the same way
A photograph beside the bed
Never showed the wider frame
The Moon hung over the balcony

Some nights felt very close
Closer than words usually get
Still something stayed behind the door
Neither of us reached for it

We loved with half of the Moon
The bright side facing out
Saving the darker corners
For another day somehow
We were complete in fragments

Coffee rings marked the kitchen table
Your sweater stayed for weeks
The television filled the silence
When neither of us spoke
The Moon kept changing outside

I don't think we were hiding
Just careful with our hands
Holding back parts of ourselves
Like letters left unsent

We loved with half of the Moon
The bright side facing out
Saving the darker corners
For another day somehow
We were complete in fragments

The curtains stayed half open
The balcony held the night
Half of the Moon above the rooftops
Half of it hidden from sight
