The Ballad of Santa Amalia

Francisco "Charro" Avitia

The Ballad of Santa Amalia

In Santa Amalia lived a young girl
Pretty and lovely like a jasmine flower
She supported herself by sewing clothes to get by
One day her wicked brother said to her
Oh, dear sister of my heart
Your beauty drives me crazy, and I want to be your husband

The poor girl was left stunned
And instantly replied to him
I’d rather die a thousand times than let you tarnish my honor

Oh, oh, oh, ha ha

The wicked brother pulled out his revolver and shot her on the spot
Hitting her in the head, shattering her skull completely
People started asking who did it, then they called the cops
Folks came from all around to see the crime in that place

Oh, damn

The judge declares that he was the one
I’m the man who killed her
Go, sister, go to heaven, I’ll pay for this in prison.
