Soldier's Last Letter
When the postman delivered a letter
It filled her old heart full of joy
But she didn't know till she read the inside
It was the last one from her darlin' boy.
''Dear mom,'' was the way that it started
''I miss you so much,'' it went on
Mom, I didn't know that I love you so
But I'll prove it when this war is won.
I'm writing this down in a trench mom
Don't scold if it isn't so neat
You know as you did when I was a kid
And came home with mud on my feet.
Now the captain just gave us our orders
And mom we will carry them thru
I'll finish this letter the first chance I get
But for now I'll just say I love you.
Then the mother's old hands began to tremble
And she fought against tears in her eyes
But they came unashamed for there was no name
And she knew that her darlin' boy had died.
That night as she knelt by her bedside
She prayed Lord above hear my plea
And protect all the sons that are fighting tonight
And dear God keep our Canada free...
La última carta del soldado
Cuando el cartero entregó una carta
Llenó su viejo corazón de alegría
Pero no supo hasta que leyó el interior
Que era la última de su querido hijo.
''Querida mamá,'' fue como empezó
''Te extraño mucho,'' continuaba
Mamá, no sabía que te amaba tanto
Pero lo demostraré cuando esta guerra se gane.
Estoy escribiendo esto en una trinchera mamá
No regañes si no está tan ordenado
Sabes como lo hacías cuando era niño
Y llegaba a casa con barro en los pies.
Ahora el capitán acaba de darnos nuestras órdenes
Y mamá las llevaremos a cabo
Terminaré esta carta en cuanto pueda
Pero por ahora solo diré que te amo.
Entonces las viejas manos de la madre empezaron a temblar
Y luchó contra las lágrimas en sus ojos
Pero vinieron sin vergüenza porque no había nombre
Y sabía que su querido hijo había muerto.
Esa noche, mientras se arrodillaba junto a su cama
Rogaba Señor arriba escucha mi súplica
Y protege a todos los hijos que están luchando esta noche
Y querido Dios mantén nuestra Canadá libre...
