At First I Prayed For Light
At first I prayed for light:
Could I but see the way,
How gladly, swiftly would I walk
To everlasting day!
And next I prayed for strength:
That I might tread the road
With firm, unfaltering feet, and win
The heavens' serene abode.
And then I prayed for faith:
Could I but trust my God,
I'd live infolded in His peace,
Though foes were all abroad.
But now I pray for love:
Deep love to God and man;
A living love that will not fail,
However dark His plan.
And light and strength and faith
Are opening everywhere!
God waited patiently until
I prayed the larger prayer.

Al principio oré por luz:
Si pudiera ver el camino,
¡Con qué alegría y rapidez caminaría
Hacia el día eterno!
Y luego oré por fuerza:
Para poder recorrer el camino
Con pies firmes e inquebrantables, y alcanzar
La serena morada de los cielos.
Y luego oré por fe:
Si pudiera confiar en mi Dios,
Viviría envuelto en Su paz,
Aunque los enemigos estuvieran por todas partes.
Pero ahora oro por amor:
Un amor profundo a Dios y al prójimo;
Un amor vivo que no fallará,
Sin importar cuán oscuro sea Su plan.
Y la luz, la fuerza y la fe
Están apareciendo por todas partes!
Dios esperó pacientemente hasta que
Oré la oración más grande.
