Race to Death

Joan Sebastian

Carrera a Muerte

En la raya, dos caballos
En la meta, dos pistolas
En el pueblo no había feria
En el llano no había bolas
Era una carrera a muerte
Era una carrera a solas

Juan Pedro dijo a Jacinto
Vamos a echarnos un trago
Porque, si te falla el Pinto
En esta noche te acabo
Y yo sé bien que ni el viento
Le gana a mi Colorado

Entonces dijo Jacinto
Mientras Juan Pedro bebía
Que Dios te lleve a su reino
Que perdone tu osadía
Voy a ganar la carrera
Y esa mujer va a ser mía

Y estando la luna llena
Brindaron por la María
Era la hembra bonita
Que los dos hombres querían

Estando la luna llena
Los dos a un tiempo contaron
Y, donde hicieron el brindis
La polvadera dejaron

Pasadito el medio llano
Los caballos se atrancaban
Como si ya presintieran
Que a la muerte se acercaban
Y, al llegar a la meta
Esa carrera empataban

Y estando la luna llena
Descolgaron sus pistolas
En el pueblo no había feria
En el llano no había bolas

Estando la luna llena
Cinco balazos sonaron
Tres acabaron con Pedro
Dos a Jacinto mataron

Dos amigos
Dos caballos
Dos pistolas
Y un amor

Los amigos ya murieron
Las pistolas se perdieron
Los caballos, sepa Dios

Dos amigos
Dos caballos
Dos pistolas
Y un amor

Los amigos ya murieron
Las pistolas se perdieron
La María se encuentra en flor

Race to Death

On the line, two horses
At the finish, two guns
In the town, there was no fair
In the field, there were no balls
It was a race to the death
It was a race alone

Juan Pedro said to Jacinto
Let’s grab a drink
Because if your Pinto fails you
Tonight, I’ll finish you off
And I know well that not even the wind
Can beat my Colorado

Then Jacinto said
While Juan Pedro was drinking
May God take you to His kingdom
And forgive your boldness
I’m going to win the race
And that woman will be mine

And with the full moon shining
They toasted to María
She was the pretty lady
That both men wanted

With the full moon shining
Both counted at the same time
And where they made the toast
They left a cloud of dust

Just past the halfway mark
The horses were struggling
As if they already sensed
That death was closing in
And when they reached the finish
They tied in that race

And with the full moon shining
They drew their pistols
In the town, there was no fair
In the field, there were no balls

With the full moon shining
Five shots rang out
Three took out Pedro
Two killed Jacinto

Two friends
Two horses
Two guns
And a love

The friends are now dead
The guns are lost
The horses, God knows

Two friends
Two horses
Two guns
And a love

The friends are now dead
The guns are lost
María is in bloom
