The Two Coins

Julio Preciado

Y me dijo perdón papasito

The Two Coins

I'm the most miserable guy in the world
And this addiction is to blame
I lost the woman I had, now I'm losing my son too
He never knew what a father was
Because I was always drunk
While he begged on the street for change
So I could keep on drinking

One night it rained all through winter
The poor kid came to where I was
And he said, "Sorry, Daddy
Now I really got nothing
I'm hungry and so damn cold
Please don’t say anything today"

But I, blinded by so much rage
I hit him until I almost killed him
And I told him, "Get out on the street
I’m done putting up with you
You have no home or father if you don’t bring
Anything to keep me drinking"

The poor kid left, shaking from the cold
And crying over what I said
While I, in the house, numb
God knows how much I cursed him

The alcohol and sleep took me down
I woke up just before dawn
And when I opened the door to the house
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing

There was my son lying there
He had died from hunger and cold
In his hand, I found two coins
That he brought me to buy more wine
And I, drunk, didn’t hear him knock
And so the poor kid died forgotten

Because of my drinking, I lost my son
And my wife whom I adored
I want to ask all the parents
Not to do harm to their children
Maybe God sent me this punishment
For throwing myself into the path of addiction
