In the Times of Boyhood

Maciel Melo

Nos Tempos de Menino

Era o caminho da roça
E a pureza de Maria
A folha verde no mato
A chuva quando caia
"Passarim" rio regato
E a natureza sorria

Era o beijo que eu cultivava
A vida que eu bem queria
Do jeito que eu sonhava
Realmente acontecia
Queria um fruto eu plantava
Vingava o fruto eu comia

Da morte eu não tinha medo
A morte eu não conhecia
Não tinha nem um segredo
Andar no mato sem guia
Nunca era tarde nem cedo
Meia-noite ou meio-dia

Fui menino mais que sete
Ou dezessete léguas e meia
Menino fui cacetete
Menino fogo nas veias
Bola de gude, pivete
Menino bola de meia

Fui menino meia-noite
Menino fui meio-dia
Menino vento de açoite
Fui o ventre da folia
Menino trovão da noite
Fui chuva, fui invernia

Fui menino pistoleiro
Menino caramanchão
Menino fui sapateiro
Menino carro de mão
Menino fui cangaceiro
Menino fui lampião

Menino, também menino fui
E o tempo deu-me a alma sua
Deu-me batente de bares
Deu-me vida nua e crua
Becos e esquinas meus lares
Moleque ponta de rua

In the Times of Boyhood

It was the path to the farm
And the purity of Maria
The green leaf in the bush
The rain when it fell
"Passarim" river stream
And nature smiled

It was the kiss I cherished
The life I truly wanted
The way I dreamed
Actually happened
I wanted a fruit, I planted it
It thrived, I ate the fruit

I wasn't afraid of death
I didn't know death
I had no secrets
Walking in the bush without a guide
It was never late or early
Midnight or noon

I was a boy more than seven
Or seventeen and a half leagues
I was a boy with energy
Boy with fire in my veins
Marbles, rascal
Boy with a sock ball

I was a boy at midnight
I was a boy at noon
Boy, whipping wind
I was the belly of revelry
Boy, thunder of the night
I was rain, I was winter

I was a boy gunslinger
Boy, arbor
I was a boy shoemaker
Boy, wheelbarrow
I was a boy bandit
Boy, lamp

Boy, I was also a boy
And time gave me its soul
Gave me bar thresholds
Gave me naked and raw life
Alleys and corners my homes
Street corner kid
