Water and Bread (Bahia)

Maria Bethânia

Água e Pão (Bahia)

Como o sol no fim do dia
Quando o mar bebe o seu fogo
Entre as ilhas e a Bahia
Como um rio, como fonte
Como um belo horizonte
Como porto, como o mar
Como o ar da madrugada
Como as pedras da calçada
Como o vento e a maresia
Como água, como pão
Como é bom tudo que vem
Sem se pedir
Céu lavado, luz de abril
Como quando estás aqui

Como o dia que amanhece
Com a luz criando espaços
Entre a sombra e a escuridão
Entre formas que se movem
Entre lábios que se beijam
Entre corpos que se dão
Como as flores nas varandas
E o perfume de jasmim
Acordando a cidade
Como água, como pão
Como é bom tudo que vem
Sem se pedir
Céu lavado, luz de abril
Como quando estás aqui

Water and Bread (Bahia)

Like the sun at the end of the day
When the sea drinks in its fire
Between the islands and Bahia
Like a river, like a spring
Like a beautiful horizon
Like a port, like the sea
Like the air of the early morning
Like the stones of the sidewalk
Like the wind and the sea breeze
Like water, like bread
How good it is, everything that comes
Without asking
Washed sky, April light
Like when you're here

Like the day that dawns
With the light creating spaces
Between shadow and darkness
Between shapes that move
Between lips that kiss
Between bodies that give
Like the flowers on the balconies
And the scent of jasmine
Waking up the city
Like water, like bread
How good it is, everything that comes
Without asking
Washed sky, April light
Like when you're here
