Rotten Inside

Mike Valen

There's a rust-bitten memory
Breathing low in my chest
A fading spark that flickers
Where my pulse once used to rest
Something stirs in the corner
Of the backroom of my head
It doesn't speak or warn me
Just grows on what I've bled

I'm stepping over remnants
That should've turned into dust
They bloom like spoiled roses
In a garden built on rust
And there's a shape in the mirror
Pulling me through the dark inside
It calls my name so gently
Like it owns what's left alive

I know, I know, there's something rotten here
I know, I know, there's something rotten here
I feel it sinking deeper and it never lets me breathe
I know, I know, there's something rotten here

Every footstep drags a weight
Like a stone tied to my spine
And the silence chews my edges
Till I'm hollow in the line
There's something dead but breathing
Wrapping fingers through my core
A crooked, dying laughter
Etching circles at my door

I know, I know, there's something rotten here
I know, I know, there's something rotten here
I feel it sinking deeper and it never lets me breathe
I know, I know, there's something rotten here

Down the hallway of my mind
There's a shadow keeping still
And every time I walk toward it
I feel it learning how to kill

I know, I know, there's something rotten here
I know, I know, there's something rotten here
I carry this voice crawling dragging right behind my feet
I know, I know, there's something rotten here
And it won't let go
