El Milagro de San Antonio
Divino Antonio precioso
Suplícale al Dios inmenso
Que por tu gracia divina
Alumbre mi entendimiento
Para que mi lengua
Refiera el milagro
Que en el huerto obraste
De edad de ocho años
Este niño fue nacido
Con mucho temor de Dios
De sus padres estimados
Y del mundo admiración
Fue caritativo y perseguidor
De todo enemigo con mucho rigor
Su padre era un caballero
Cristiano honrado y prudente
Que mantenía su casa
Con el sudor de su frente
Y tenía un huerto donde recogía
Cosechas y frutos
Que el tiempo traía
Por la mañana un domingo
Como siempre acostumbraba
Se marchó su padre a misa
Cosa que nunca olvidaba
Le dijo Antoñito
Ven aquí, hijo amado
Escucha que tengo
Que darte un recado
Mientras tanto yo esté en misa
Buen cuidado has de tener
Mira que los pajaritos
Todo lo echan a perder
Entran en el huerto
Comen el sembrado
Por eso te encargo
Que tengas cuidado
Cuando se ausentó su padre
Y a la iglesia se marchó
Antonio quedó cuidando
Y a los pájaros llamó
Venid pajaritos
No entréis en sembrado
Que mi padre ha dicho
Que tenga cuidado
Por aquellas cercanías
Ningún pájaro quedó
Porque todos acudieron
Cuando Antonio los llamó
Lleno de alegría
San Antonio estaba
Y los pajaritos
Alegres cantaban
Al ver venir a su padre
A todos les mandó callar
Llegó su padre a la puerta
Y comenzó a preguntar
Dime, hijo amado
¿Qué tal, antoñito?
¿Has cuidado bien
De los pajaritos?
Antonio le contestó
Padre, no tenga cuidado
Que para que no hagan mal
Todos los tengo encerrados
Su padre, al ver
Milagro tan grande
Al señor obispo
Trató de avisarle
Y acudió el señor obispo
Con todo acompañamiento
Quedando todos confusos
Al ver tan grande portento
Abrieron ventanas
Puertas a la par
A ver si las aves
Se quieren marchar
Antonio les dijo a todos
Señores, nadie se alarme
Los pájaros no se marchan
Hasta que yo no les mande
Se puso en la puerta
Y les dijo así
Vaya pajaritos, ya podéis salir
Salgan cigüeñas con orden
Águilas, grullas y garzas
Avutardas, gavilanes
Lechuzas, mochuelos, grajas
Salgan las urracas
Tórtolas, perdices
Palomas, gorriones
Y las codornices
Salga el cuco y el milano
Burlapastor y andarrios
Canarios y ruiseñores
Tordos, bifaros y mirlos
Salgan verderones
Y las cardelinas
Las cucurujadas
Y las golondrinas
Al instante que salieron
Todas juntitas se ponen
A escuchar a San Antonio
Para ver lo que dispone
Y Antonio les dijo
No entréis en sembrado
Marchaos por montes
Ricos verdes prados
Y al tiempo de alzar el vuelo
Cantan con dulce armonía
Despidiéndose de Antonio
Y toda su compañía
Antonio divino
Por tu intercesión
Todos merezcamos
Eterna mansión
The Miracle of Saint Anthony
Divine Anthony, so precious
Pray to the mighty God
That by your divine grace
You enlighten my understanding
So that my tongue
Can tell the miracle
That you worked
In the garden at eight years old
This child was born
With great fear of God
From esteemed parents
And admired by the world
He was charitable and a pursuer
Of every enemy with great rigor
His father was a gentleman
A Christian, honorable and wise
Who supported his household
With the sweat of his brow
And had a garden where he gathered
Crops and fruits
That the seasons brought
One Sunday morning
As was his custom
His father went to mass
Something he never forgot
He said, little Anthony
Come here, beloved son
Listen, I have
A message for you
While I’m at mass
You must take good care
Watch out for the little birds
They’ll ruin everything
They enter the garden
And eat the crops
That’s why I charge you
To be careful
When his father left
And went to church
Antonio stayed watching
And called the birds
Come here, little birds
Don’t go into the crops
For my father said
To be careful
In that area
Not a single bird remained
Because they all came
When Antonio called
Filled with joy
Saint Anthony was
And the little birds
Sang happily
Seeing his father coming
He told them all to be quiet
His father reached the door
And began to ask
Tell me, beloved son
How’s it going, little Anthony?
Did you take good care
Of the little birds?
Antonio replied
Father, don’t worry
To keep them from doing harm
I have them all locked up
His father, seeing
Such a great miracle
Tried to inform
The bishop
And the bishop came
With all his entourage
Leaving everyone confused
At such a great wonder
They opened windows
And doors at the same time
To see if the birds
Wanted to leave
Antonio said to them all
Gentlemen, no one be alarmed
The birds won’t leave
Until I give the command
He stood at the door
And said this
Go, little birds, you can now fly out
Come out, storks in order
Eagles, cranes, and herons
Bustards, hawks
Owls, little owls, crows
Come out, magpies
Turtledoves, partridges
Doves, sparrows
And quails
Come out, cuckoo and kite
Pastor-bird and sandpipers
Canaries and nightingales
Thrushes, bifaros, and blackbirds
Come out, greenfinches
And goldfinches
The cuckoo's calls
And the swallows
The moment they flew out
All together they gathered
To listen to Saint Anthony
To see what he decides
And Antonio told them
Don’t go into the crops
Go off to the mountains
Rich green meadows
And as they took flight
They sang with sweet harmony
Bidding farewell to Antonio
And all his company
Divine Antonio
By your intercession
May we all deserve
Eternal dwelling.
