The Gathering

Pedro Infante

The Gathering

The other night I went to a party at Julia's house
The family was already gathered
Mari-Pepa, Felícitas, Luz and Otilia
And Camila, who brightened up the gathering

While Lupe gave the baby his bottle
Doña Cleta asked Celia for a bottle
She lined up those we trusted in two rows
And we toasted with charanda from Morelia

Then Amelia put on the record player
And we danced, all mixed up
There was a cadet who was jealous of Chelo
But the little one was having fun with Gaspar

Then they gave us jelly sandwiches
Some had punch and the sad ones had Coca-Cola
The cat doesn't even move to serve
I went to the kitchen with my tray

There I found Ofelia's little friends
Who had smuggled in their tequila
We had a few drinks behind the pile
And we almost had Amelia fall over

Then they asked Lola to sing
And we endured: There I bid you farewell
Then Aunt Cleta played the piano
So she wouldn't talk, we gave her a good round of applause

I gathered my courage and sang: The letter to Eufemia
Which made me laugh and a little monkey teased me
I was about to start, but Eugenia stopped me
If not, I would already be in line in limbo

But the jelly was already digested
The general's wife was making a fuss over me
It was Carola, the gossip, who caused trouble
And the old man came and the fight began

Chaos broke out, he pulled out his gun
I, cautious, hid behind the piano
Julia came, called Carola
And they took us to jail, all mixed up
