A Little Longer

Perfecto Miserable

No tenía miedo

Y empezaba a hacerse tarde

Y no dijimos gran cosa
Y te ofreciste a llevarme devuelta a casa

A Little Longer

And no matter how far I swam from the shore
I wasn't scared
And I didn't care if salt got in my eyes
And I didn't mind getting burned by the sun
'Cause the pain the next day
Would be a nice memory

And you spent like an hour looking for your phone
And in the end, you left it in the car
And I spent like three hours laughing at you
Lying on the towel
And we drank like a hundred cans of beer
And there weren't many people around
And there was a little bit of wind
And I would have liked to stay a little longer
But your mom called you
And it was getting late
And the sun was going down
But I would have liked to stay a little longer

With my eyes half-closed
And a book resting on my chest
Talking about unimportant things
Like our favorite characters from Adventure Time
And watching the sky turn orange

But instead
We packed our stuff
And walked slowly to the car
And we didn't say much
And you were twisting your hands and looking at the ground
And I watched the waves distort the sun's reflection in the water
And with a smile that was fading
We put our things in the trunk
And we told each other how much fun we had
And that we had to do it again another day
And you started the car
And offered to take me back home
But I told you it was fine
That I could catch the bus
But what I really meant
Was something else

Couldn't we have stayed a little longer?
And who cares if you get home a bit late?
And who cares if I have to get up early tomorrow?
And who cares if your mom calls you?

If most days you can't get out of bed
If most days you can't get up
If you have to force yourself
If you have to force yourself to leave the house
If getting dressed, showering, brushing your teeth, and going out to see your friends is a marathon

We don't need to wash off the traces of salt, sadness, and sand from our bodies
We don't need to fall asleep alone begrudgingly
Staring at the same damn star-shaped stain on the wall
The rest of our days can all be happy days
And your friends will never turn their backs on you again
And surely your Fine Arts degree is good for something
And you'll find a way to balance your hobbies and your job
And to party without ending up puking
And to go to sleep without hating your room, your body, your brain, and everything inside
And you'll find a way to balance on the tightrope of happiness

(Some day, if you hold on a little longer)
