The Death of My Gray Horse

Reynaldo Armas

La Muerte Del Rucio Moro

Caramba ñero
Se oscurecieron mis días
Aalzó en vuelo mi alegría
Cuando menos lo esperaba
Triste mañana
Sentí perder un tesoro
Mi caballo rucio moro
Donde yo siempre coleaba

Lo hallaron en el potrero
En el potrero
Con la nuca reventada
Parece que una centella
Le dio una vuelta e campana

Quién se iba a imaginar
Que a mi caballito
Algo malo le aguardaba
Para quitarme la vida
Dejando mi alma enlutada

Parti enseguida
Al conocer la noticia
Viendo la caballeriza
Un poquito solitaria
Llegué al lugar
Donde estaba mi caballo vi
Los impactos de un rayo
En medio de cuatro palmas

Más a la orilla del río
Con otras bestias
Andaba la potra Zaina
Ddando vuelta y relinchando
Bastante desesperada

Pobre mi caballo rucio
Arrodillado
Con la cabeza encajada
Cuando fui a cerrar sus ojos
Le brotaron sendas lágrimas

Pasó la brisa
Desensillando añoranzas
Mientras una garza blanca
Observaba en la cañada
Cantó un carrao
En una punta de mata
Y una triste paraulata
Enmudeció la sabana

En las arenas del río
Mi rucio moro
Dejó sus patas marcadas
Cuando con su potra fue
A retozar en la playa

La soga de mi cariño
De mi cariño
Apareció reventada
Por unos cuantos tirones
Del destino en su jugada

Adiós amigo
Me brotó del corazón
Sentí gran desolación
Cuando le daba la espalda
Un hueco grande
Donde su cuerpo cupiera
Y encima del poco e tierra
Mi sombrero pelo e guama

Pa' que el rocio mañanero
Caballo rucio
Humedezca mi plegaria
Y los albores del tiempo
Le den su gracia temprana
Que le traigan serenata
Los pajaritos
Que vienen de la montaña
Para que su negra senda
Se le convierta en hazaña

Cayó la tarde
Enmarcada en arreboles
Cuantas lunas cuantos soles
Presagiaron mi nostalgia
Se fue el Jilguero
Que pregono mi alegría
Pedazo de vida mía
Retacito de mi infancia

Querubin de mis anhelos
De mis anhelos
Cercania de mi distancia
Cuanto quisiera quitarle
Al mastranto su fragancia

Ceñirme en el desespero
De aquel lucero
Que titila y se quebranta
El que muere lentamente
Amoldado a mi esperanza

Caballo rucio
Te saliste del corral
Convertido en vendaval

Volaste la puerta es tranca
Jamás pensaste
Que te acechaba la muerte
Culpable tu mala suerte
Que te condujo a la trampa

Entre lienzos del recuerdo
Caballo mío
Inerte queda tu estampa
Para tus tantos amigos
Un manantial de añoranzas

Hoy tu destino es un bongo
Bongo perdido
De canalete y palanca
Varado y abandonado
En los confines de Arauca

Silla y bozal
Se preguntan con dolor
Porqué el destino traidor
No cambiaria su morada
La talanquera
Que bastante le apoyó
Triste también comentó
Esta de luto la manga

Desde el coso hasta el tapón
Se oye un murmullo
De entre cortadas palabras
Y las muchachas reparten
En lluvia cintas doradas

Con la tarde veranera
Allá en el monte
Se oye cantar la chicharra
Y un vesperal de nostalgia
Se lleva el viento en sus alas

Agüita fresca
Esta ofreciendo el jagüey
Mientras allá en el caney
Me aguarda mi campechana
Grito altanero
De soberano sentir
Tu no te vas a morir
Mientras existan sábanas

Desde un rincón oriental
En Venezuela
Por el estado Monagas
Hasta el impetuoso Meta
En las tierras Colombianas

Remontando en Orinoco
El río Apure
Casanare y el Vichada
Para morirte de viejo
En las ondas Araucanas

The Death of My Gray Horse

Damn it, buddy
My days have turned dark
My joy took flight
When I least expected it
Sad morning
I felt like I lost a treasure
My gray horse
Where I always rode hard

They found him in the pasture
In the pasture
With his neck broken
Looks like a lightning bolt
Flipped him upside down

Who would have imagined
That something bad awaited
My little horse
To take my life away
Leaving my soul in mourning

I took off right away
When I heard the news
Seeing the stable
A little lonely
I arrived at the place
Where my horse lay
The marks of a lightning strike
Amidst four palm trees

But by the riverbank
With other beasts
Was the mare Zaina
Running around and neighing
Pretty desperate

Poor my gray horse
Kneeling down
With his head stuck
When I went to close his eyes
Tears streamed down

The breeze passed
Unpacking memories
While a white heron
Watched in the hollow
A carrao sang
On a bush's edge
And a sad paraulata
Silenced the savanna

In the river's sands
My gray horse
Left his hoofprints
When he went
To frolic on the beach

The rope of my love
Of my love
Showed up broken
From a few tugs
Of fate in its game

Goodbye, my friend
It came from my heart
I felt great desolation
When I turned my back
A big hole
Where his body fit
And on the little dirt
My hat made of guama

So that the morning dew
Gray horse
Can wet my prayer
And the dawn of time
Gives him early grace
May the birds
Coming from the mountains
Bring him serenades
So that his dark path
Turns into a feat

The afternoon fell
Framed in red hues
How many moons, how many suns
Foretold my nostalgia
The Jilguero left
That proclaimed my joy
A piece of my life
A fragment of my childhood

Cherub of my desires
Of my desires
Close to my distance
How much I wish to take away
The fragrance from the mastranto

To wrap myself in the despair
Of that star
That twinkles and breaks
The one that dies slowly
Molded to my hope

Gray horse
You broke out of the corral
Turned into a whirlwind

You flew through the locked door
Never thought
That death was lurking
Your bad luck was to blame
That led you to the trap

Among the canvases of memory
My horse
Your image remains still
For your many friends
A spring of longing

Today your fate is a bongo
Lost bongo
With a paddle and lever
Stranded and abandoned
In the confines of Arauca

Saddle and halter
Ask in pain
Why the treacherous fate
Wouldn't change its dwelling
The fence
That supported him so much
Sadly also commented
This is mourning for the corral

From the arena to the plug
A murmur is heard
Among cut-off words
And the girls distribute
Golden ribbons in the rain

With the summer afternoon
Out in the woods
You can hear the cicada sing
And a nostalgic evening
Is carried away by the wind on its wings

Fresh water
Is offered by the jagüey
While over there in the caney
My campechana awaits me
A proud shout
Of sovereign feeling
You won't die
As long as there are sheets

From an eastern corner
In Venezuela
Through the state of Monagas
To the impetuous Meta
In Colombian lands

Rising up the Orinoco
The Apure River
Casanare and Vichada
To die of old age
In the Araucanian waves
