Consecration of Bread and Wine

Rolando Alárcon

Consagración del pan y el vino

Cuando tomaron el pan
tus manos de hombre, Cristo,
mirando al cielo dijiste:
ésta es la prueba que existo.

A tus discípulos diste
el pan de vida sagrado,
a cada uno su parte
le repartiste en pedazos.

Tal vez en jarro de greda
echaste tu sangre un día,
la repartiste al pueblo,
mataste la sed que había.

Y en vino rojo tu sangre
se convirtió aquella vez,
si no te importa perderla
a la tierra ha de volver.

Consecration of Bread and Wine

When you took the bread
in your hands, Christ,
looking up to the sky you said:
this is the proof that I exist.

To your disciples you gave
the sacred bread of life,
to each one their portion
you distributed in pieces.

Perhaps in a clay jar
you poured out your blood one day,
distributed it to the people,
quenched the thirst that was there.

And in red wine your blood
turned that time,
if you don't mind losing it
to the earth it shall return.
