My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew

I don't know when, but we'll get together then son

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

I don't know when, but we'll get together then son

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"

You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

Mein Kind kam neulich zur Welt
Er kam auf die übliche Art und Weise zur Welt
Doch es gab Flüge zu erwischen und Rechnungen zu bezahlen
Er lernte zu laufen, während ich weg war
Und er sprach, bevor ich es merkte, und als er wuchs
Sagte er: "Ich werde wie du, Papa
Weißt du, ich werde wie du sein"

Wann kommst du nach Hause, Papa?
Ich weiß nicht wann, aber wir sehen uns dann, Sohn

Mein Sohn wurde neulich zehn
Er sagte: "Danke für den Ball, Papa, lass uns spielen
Kannst du mir werfen beibringen?", ich sagte: "Nicht heute
Ich habe viel zu tun", er sagte: "Das ist okay"
Und er ging weg, aber sein Lächeln verblasste nie
Und sagte: "Ich werde wie er sein, ja

Nun, er kam neulich von der Uni nach Hause
So sehr wie ein Mann, dass ich einfach sagen musste
"Sohn, ich bin stolz auf dich, kannst du dich eine Weile setzen?"
Er schüttelte den Kopf und sagte mit einem Lächeln
"Was ich wirklich möchte, Papa, ist die Autoschlüssel auszuleihen
Bis später, kann ich sie bitte haben?"

Ich bin schon lange in Rente, mein Sohn ist weggezogen
Ich rief ihn neulich an
Ich sagte: "Ich würde dich gerne sehen, wenn es dir nichts ausmacht"
Er sagte: "Ich würde gerne, Papa, wenn ich die Zeit finde
Siehst du, mein neuer Job ist stressig und die Kinder haben die Grippe
Aber es ist wirklich schön, mit dir zu reden, Papa
Es war wirklich schön, mit dir zu reden"
Und als ich auflegte, fiel mir auf
Er war genau wie ich groß geworden
Mein Junge war genau wie ich
