Miracle of Saint Anthony

Vicente da Câmara

Milagre de Santo António

Encontrei abandonada
Uma rosa que te dei
Tão tristonha e desolada
Quase morta, desprezada
Que tive pena e parei

Foi bela sem ter igual
Hoje triste e pobrezinha
Não tive culpa afinal
Que de mim pensasses mal
E não quisesses ser minha

Mas Santo António que estava
Ali perto, em oração
Pediu-me se lhe emprestava
Essa flor que eu tanto amava
E levantara do chão

Entreguei-lhe o que pedia
E ele rezou novamente
Era noite, fez-se dia
E a rosa que envelhecia
Fez-se em botão de repente

Miracle of Saint Anthony

I found abandoned
A rose that I gave you
So sad and desolate
Almost dead, despised
I felt sorry and stopped

It was beautiful like no other
Today sad and poor
I wasn't to blame after all
That you thought badly of me
And didn't want to be mine

But Saint Anthony who was
There nearby, in prayer
Asked me if I would lend him
That flower that I loved so much
And had picked up from the ground

I gave him what he asked for
And he prayed again
It was night, it became day
And the rose that was aging
Became a bud suddenly
