The Pilgrimage

Victor Manuel

The Pilgrimage

The young men are going up
with the lambs on their shoulders
happy people climb to the patron's party
The girl climbs up
new shoes, boyfriend, and a purse
and all the green of the valley is reflected in the stream

And the people in the meadow
won't stop dancing
as long as a bagpipe is heard
or there's cider in the cider press,
as long as a bagpipe is heard
or there's cider in the cider press.

They go along the road
crossing cradle and ash
the pilgrim sings his sorrow and the old woman gives her advice
By Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian
careful, young girl
don't cross the cornfield
or water it with your tears

And the people in the meadow
won't stop dancing
as long as a bagpipe is heard
or there's cider in the cider press
as long as a bagpipe is heard
or there's cider in the cider press.

There's a steep slope
to reach the hermitage
and the bells ring
the pilgrims go to mass
and the shepherd with his flock
with his bag and the cows
wants to be a light bell
and wake up his beloved

and the people in the meadow
won't stop dancing
as long as a bagpipe is heard
or there's cider in the cider press
as long as a bagpipe is heard
or there's cider in the cider press.
