I saw the vision of armies;

And i saw, as in noiseless dreams, hundreds of battle-flags,

Borne through the smoke of the battles and pierced with missiles, i saw them,

And carried, hither and yon through the smoke, and torn and bloody;

And at last but a few shreds of 'the flags left on the staffs, (and all in silence,)

And the staffs all splintered and broken.

I saw battle-corpses, myriads of them,

And the white skeletons of young men, i saw them;

I saw the debris and debris of all dead soldiers,

But i saw they were not as was thought;

They themselves were fully at rest, they suffered not;

The living remained and suffered, the mother suffered,

And the wife and the child and the musing comrade suffered,

And the armies that remained suffered..

Vi la visión de los ejércitos;

Y vi, como en sueños silenciosos, cientos de banderas de batalla,

Llevadas a través del humo de las batallas y perforadas con misiles, las vi,

Y llevadas de aquí para allá a través del humo, desgarradas y ensangrentadas;

Y al final solo quedaron unos pocos jirones de las banderas en los mástiles, (y todo en silencio),

Y los mástiles todos astillados y rotos.

Vi cadáveres de batalla, miríadas de ellos,

Y los esqueletos blancos de jóvenes, los vi;

Vi los escombros y despojos de todos los soldados muertos,

Pero vi que no estaban como se pensaba;

Ellos mismos estaban completamente en paz, no sufrían;

Los vivos permanecían y sufrían, la madre sufría,

Y la esposa y el hijo y el camarada reflexivo sufrían,

Y los ejércitos que quedaban sufrían.
