I Think I Shall Never See
3000 years ago the world was a giant place.
expansive forests untouched lands
skies were for the birds, trees were forever
and natures worst invention had yet to form a plan
but our population grew
and with it grew ambition and desire to conquer all we can
own what we cannot, throw the unnecessary away
today only 5% of the forests in our country exist
of what there was just 200 years ago
and beautiful feats of nature formed
by thousands of years of patient practice
are destroyed without a second thought for "precious" resources
that will make the economny grow
my grandparents had never seen a plane,
a skyscraper, or a motor car or a cellphone or tv
my parents worked so hard to destroy the gifts given to us
now my grandchildren will never see a tree
someday i'll take a small child
down to the last grass covered hill in my town
and say "the whole world was once like this and more"
but words and photographs won't make them understand
the dinosaurs have been around for thousands of more
years than we could ever hope to be
and isn't it ironic we're the ones destroying earth
instead of the planet killing me
a friend of mine used to deep sea dive
but he doesn't do it anymore
he gets tears in his eyes when you ask him why and says
"the ugliest stretch of ocean floor 10 years ago
is a thousand times more beautiful than the most beautiful today"
that was just ten years ago
only ten fuckin' years ago
Creo que nunca veré
Hace 3000 años el mundo era un lugar gigante.
Bosques expansivos, tierras vírgenes,
el cielo era para los pájaros, los árboles eran eternos,
y la peor invención de la naturaleza aún no había formado un plan.
Pero nuestra población creció,
y con ella creció la ambición y el deseo de conquistar todo lo que podamos,
poseer lo que no podemos, desechar lo innecesario.
Hoy solo existe el 5% de los bosques en nuestro país,
de lo que había hace solo 200 años.
Y las maravillas de la naturaleza formadas
por miles de años de práctica paciente
son destruidas sin pensarlo dos veces por recursos 'preciosos'
que harán crecer la economía.
Mis abuelos nunca habían visto un avión,
un rascacielos, un automóvil o un celular o televisión.
Mis padres trabajaron tan duro para destruir los regalos que nos dieron,
ahora mis nietos nunca verán un árbol.
Algún día llevaré a un niño pequeño
hasta la última colina cubierta de pasto en mi ciudad
y diré 'todo el mundo era una vez así y más',
pero las palabras y las fotografías no los harán entender
que los dinosaurios han existido por miles de años más
de lo que podríamos esperar ser.
¿Y no es irónico que seamos nosotros los que estamos destruyendo la Tierra
en lugar de que el planeta me esté matando a mí?
Un amigo solía bucear en lo más profundo del mar,
pero ya no lo hace más.
Se le llenan los ojos de lágrimas cuando le preguntas por qué y dice
'la parte más fea del fondo marino hace 10 años
es mil veces más hermosa que la más hermosa hoy'.
Eso fue hace solo diez años,
solo diez malditos años.
