Pedro Zé, A Northeasterner

Catedral

Pedro Zé, Um Nordestino

Lá vem Pedro Zé, lá vem Pedro Zé
Um nordestino, pobre de menino
Filho do sertão
Trazendo no peito a dor,
A mágoa viva
Fruto de uma civilização
Nas mãos todo ódio de um mundo
Que o traiu pela injustiça e solidão

Mas não tem problema moço não
Eu sou um cabra macho sim Senhor
E não é tão fácil me vencer
Conheço os mistérios de uma flor

Lá vem Pedro Zé
Chegando na tal cidade grande
Berço de toda injustiça social
E ele só queria uma saída
Apenas uma chance para trabalhar
Sou homem de bem
De uma família que é humilde
Mas que tem no coração,
A vontade de ajudar

E quando a fome me abateu
E o desespero me alcançou
Fui a uma igreja recorrer
E um homem então pra mim falou

Que que há rapaz?
Você tá de porre,
Sai pra lá seu vagabundo
Você pode trabalhar
Em lugar de "santos"
Você não pode entrar bêbado
E não pode nem fumar
E quer saber mais vai dando o fora rapidinho
Que se não vou te expulsar

Então Pedro Zé saiu de lá
E pela primeira vez chorou
Não tinha vontade de viver
E aí foi que ele planejou

Eu vou me matar
Sou um pobre coitado,
Tô cheirando um mal danado
E não tenho onde ficar
Mas juro a vocês,
Que lá no fundo do meu peito
Eu só queria era aguentar
Meu Deus me perdoe
Sei que é pecado de morte
Mas não vou continuar

E aí eu pergunto a vocês
Por que é difícil se amar
Por que é difícil se ajudar
Por que tanto mal existe aqui
O que foi deixado para nós?
Amai-vos como eu vos amei
Por que não lutamos pelo bem?
Qual é o sentido de viver?
Mas Deus sabe tudo que Ele faz
E não deixará isso assim
Pobre Pedro Zé homem bom
Nunca merecia esse fim
Não é que dentro de uma igrejinha
Três pessoas ouviram ele falar
E o seguiram a noite inteirinha

A Jesus aceitou e correu feliz
Vou pra minha terra quero ver Maria
E com ela eu quero me casar

Lá vai Pedro Zé, boa sorte Zé
Deus te ama Zé, não se esquece não Zé

Pedro Zé, A Northeasterner

Here comes Pedro Zé, here comes Pedro Zé
A Northeasterner, poor as a kid
Son of the backlands
Carrying in his heart the pain,
The living sorrow
Of a civilization
In his hands all the hatred of a world
That betrayed him with injustice and loneliness

But it’s no problem, man
I’m a tough guy, yes sir
And it’s not that easy to beat me
I know the secrets of a flower

Here comes Pedro Zé
Arriving in that big city
Cradle of all social injustice
And he just wanted a way out
Just a chance to work
I’m a good man
From a humble family
But with a heart,
The will to help

And when hunger hit me hard
And despair caught up with me
I went to a church to seek help
And a man then spoke to me

What’s up, dude?
You’re wasted,
Get outta here, you bum
You can work
Instead of being a "saint"
You can’t come in drunk
And you can’t even smoke
And wanna know more? Get the hell outta here quick
Or I’ll throw you out

So Pedro Zé left there
And for the first time he cried
He didn’t want to live
And that’s when he planned

I’m gonna kill myself
I’m a poor wretch,
I’m smelling like hell
And I have nowhere to stay
But I swear to you,
That deep down in my heart
I just wanted to hold on
My God forgive me
I know it’s a mortal sin
But I can’t go on

And then I ask you
Why is it so hard to love?
Why is it so hard to help?
Why is there so much evil here?
What was left for us?
Love one another as I have loved you
Why don’t we fight for good?
What’s the point of living?
But God knows everything He does
And won’t let this go
Poor Pedro Zé, a good man
Never deserved this end
It’s not that inside a little church
Three people heard him speak
And followed him all night long
With a strong desire to help

Pedro Zé went to the Rio-Niterói bridge
And from there just wanted to jump
But three voices
Cried out with emotion
Don’t jump, God loves you, Zé
We came here to take you home

Pedro Zé heard in his heart
That kindness
Is greater than the evil that exists
He accepted Jesus and ran happily
I’m going back to my land, I want to see Maria
And with her, I want to get married

Here goes Pedro Zé, good luck, Zé
God loves you, Zé, don’t forget it, Zé
