Double Takes
We met in the emergency ward,
Getting our stomachs pumped.
Suffered the indignities two curtains apart.
Overhead the cop who brought you in say,
"next time, son, you might not be so lucky."
And i laughed out loud.
You counted all the times you crashed your car
I showed you the scars on my arms.
We stuttered and stopped right there
Till i got a brilliant idea
And kicked my legs right out from under me
Trying to kick up my heels
And you laughed and said,
"you tried so hard."
The first time we said goodnight
I could hardly speak let alone sleep
Took a deep breath, let it out and then
Looked straight at you and said,
"i don't think life just happens to you
More likely in spite of you
It's a marvelous thing
Dobles Miradas
Nos conocimos en la sala de emergencias,
Haciéndonos bombear el estómago.
Sufrimos las indignidades a dos cortinas de distancia.
Sobre nosotros, el policía que te trajo dijo,
'la próxima vez, hijo, quizás no tengas tanta suerte.'
Y me reí en voz alta.
Contaste todas las veces que chocaste tu auto,
Te mostré las cicatrices en mis brazos.
Tartamudeamos y nos detuvimos ahí mismo,
Hasta que se me ocurrió una brillante idea
Y pateé mis piernas debajo de mí,
Intentando levantar los talones,
Y te reíste y dijiste,
'lo intentaste tan duro.'
La primera vez que nos dijimos buenas noches
Apenas podía hablar, mucho menos dormir.
Tomé una respiración profunda, la solté y luego
Te miré directamente y dije,
'no creo que la vida simplemente te suceda,
Más probablemente a pesar de ti,
Es una cosa maravillosa.'
