This Endris Night
This endris night I saw a sight,
A star bright as day;
And ever amoung, a maiden sung:
"Lullay, by by lullay".
This lovely lady sat and sung,
And to her child did say:
"My son, my brother, father dear,
Why liest thou thus in hay?"
The child then spake in his talking,
And to his mother said,
"Yea, I am known as Heaven's king
In crib though I be laid
"For angels bright down to me alight:
Thou knowest 'tis [true to say];
And for that sight thou may'st delight
And sing 'By by lullay'."
"Yet, sweet son, since thou art a king,
Why are thou laid in stall?
Why dost not order thy bedding
In some great kinges hall?
"Methinks 'tis right that king or knight
Should lie in good array;
And them amoung it be not wrong
To sing 'By by lullay'."
"Mary Mother, I am child
Though I be laid in stall;
For lords and dukes shall worship me
And so shall kinges all.
"So in they arm thou hold me warm,
And keep me night and day;
And if I weep and may no sleep
Then sing 'By by lullay'."
Esta Noche de Endris
Esta noche de endris vi un espectáculo,
Una estrella brillante como el día;
Y entre tanto, una doncella cantaba:
'Arrullo, duérmete, arrullo'.
Esta encantadora dama se sentó y cantó,
Y a su hijo le dijo:
'Hijo mío, hermano, padre querido,
¿Por qué yaces así en el pesebre?'
El niño entonces habló en su parloteo,
Y a su madre le dijo,
'Sí, soy conocido como el rey del Cielo
Aunque esté acostado en el pesebre.
'Pues los brillantes ángeles descienden hacia mí:
Sabes que es verdad decir;
Y por esa visión puedes deleitarte
Y cantar 'Duérmete, arrullo'.
'Sin embargo, dulce hijo, siendo un rey,
¿Por qué estás acostado en el establo?
¿Por qué no ordenas tu lecho
En algún gran salón de reyes?
'Me parece correcto que rey o caballero
Deberían yacer bien arreglados;
Y entre ellos no está mal
Cantar 'Duérmete, arrullo'.
'Madre María, soy un niño
Aunque esté acostado en el establo;
Pues señores y duques me adorarán
Y también lo harán todos los reyes.
'Así que en tus brazos mantenme caliente,
Y cuídame noche y día;
Y si lloro y no puedo dormir
Entonces canta 'Duérmete, arrullo'.'
