Salve, Terra gentil que fulguras,
No regaço da Terra de Minas,
Como um cofre das glórias mais puras,
Como um alvo das bênçãos mais divinas.
És estância de grato repouso
Aos que chegam cansados da luta!...
O teu seio é oásis formoso,
Onde uma alma o descanso desfruta!...
Há nas rochas de tuas montanhas
Um poema de glórias escrito:
Teu denodo em grandes campanhas
Teu amor no trabalho bendito.
Tua história de sempre, aparece
Circundada de um halo de luz
Pois se a glória o teu nome enobrece,
De bondade o teu nome reluz.
As muralhas das tuas igrejas
Sào proclamas da Fé que tu tens,
Fé que anima o fervor das pelejas,
Fé que abranda da vida os vaivéns.
Salve Terra!… Entre terras mineiras
Tens um posto de grande fulgor
Foram tuas as vozes primeiras
Contra o mal de um governo opressor.
Salve, terra querida e formosa!...
Salve terra de São João del-Rei!...
Sê tu sempre feliz e gloriosa,
Sentinela da Crença e da Lei!

Proclaim the Faith you have,
Faith that inspires fervor in battles,
Faith that softens life's vicissitudes.

Against the evil of an oppressive government.
