Synopsis
Narrator tells us we are about to hear the story of a person like any one of us - a dreamer - whose dreams came true (PROLOGUE). We jump back to Biblical times and meet Jacob, who had twelve sons of whom Joseph was his favorite (JACOB AND SONS). To show his love for Joseph, Jacob gives him a multi-coloured coat (JOSEPH'S COAT). Joseph's brothers resent the favoritism and the fact that Joseph has high aspirations (JOSEPH'S DREAMS). Fraught with jealousy, the brothers throw him in a pit and are going to leave him there when they are approached by the Ishmaelites. They change their minds and sell Joseph off to slavery in Egypt, telling their father he had been killed by a goat (POOR POOR JOSEPH / ONE MORE ANGEL IN HEAVEN).
In Egypt, Joseph works for POTIPHAR and manages to achieve great heights by working very hard.
But when Potiphar's wife tries
to seduce Joseph and they are caught together,
Joseph is thrown into prison
(POOR POOR JOSEPH / CLOSE EVERY DOOR).
Everything seems to be lost
but Joseph's hope is rekindled
when he interprets the dreams
of two other prisoners - the Pharaoh's Butler and Baker (GO GO GO JOSEPH). Up at the palace,
Pharaoh is having some very strange dreams
himself (PHARAOH STORY / POOR POOR PHARAOH).
The butler, now freed, remembers Joseph
and tells the king of
his interpratative powers.
Pharaoh sends for Joseph
and the dreams are explained
(SONG OF THE KING / PHARAOH'S DREAMS EXPLAINED)
There is going to be a period of
plenty in the land, followed by a harsh famine
Pharaoh is impressed by Joseph and makes
him his second in command (STONE THE CROWS).
Back in Canaan, the future looks rough.
Jacob's family is finding it tough,
remembering the good times they once had
(THOSE CANAAN DAYS). Deciding the cannot
live on what they have,
THE BROTHERS GO TO EGYPT to ask for food.
They appear before
Joseph and do not recognise him.
Joseph makes them GROVEL,
and then accuses Benjamin of stealing
his precious golden cup (WHO'S THE THIEF?).
The brothers leap to his defence (BENJAMIN CALYPSO)
and Joseph sees they are changed men.
He reveals himself (JOSPEH ALL THE TIME).
Everyone rejoices and Jacob is
happy to be reunited with his beloved son
(JACOB IN EGYPT). Joseph sings of his dreams
once more and displays an even more fabulous
technicolor dreamcoat
(ANY DREAM WILL DO/GIVE ME MY COLORED COAT)
Sinopsis
El narrador nos dice que estamos a punto de escuchar la historia de una persona como cualquiera de nosotros, un soñador, cuyos sueños se hicieron realidad (PRÓLOGUE). Volvemos a los tiempos bíblicos y nos encontramos con Jacob, que tuvo doce hijos de los cuales José era su favorito (JACOB E HIJOS). Para mostrar su amor por José, Jacob le da un abrigo multicolor (BAT DE JOSEPH). Los hermanos de José se resienten con el favoritismo y el hecho de que José tenga grandes aspiraciones (JOSEP'S SUEÑOS). Encargadas de celos, los hermanos lo tiran en un pozo y lo van a dejar allí cuando los ismaelitas se les acerquen. Cambian de opinión y venden a José a la esclavitud en Egipto, diciéndole a su padre que había sido asesinado por una cabra (PODER JOSÉ/UN ÁNGEL MÁS EN EL CIELO)
En Egipto, José trabaja para POTIPHAR y logra alcanzar grandes alturas trabajando muy duro
Pero cuando la esposa de Potifar intenta
para seducir a José y son atrapados juntos
José es arrojado a la cárcel
(POBRE JOSEPH/CIERRA TODAS LAS PUERTAS)
Todo parece estar perdido
pero la esperanza de José se reaviva
cuando interpreta los sueños
de otros dos prisioneros: el mayordomo del faraón y el panadero (GO GO GO GO JOSEPH). En el palacio
El faraón está teniendo unos sueños muy extraños
sí mismo (HISTORIA DEL FARAO/ POOR FARAÓN)
El mayordomo, ahora liberado, recuerda a José
y le dice al rey de
sus poderes interpratativos
El faraón envía a buscar a José
y los sueños se explican
(CANCIÓN DEL REY/SUEÑOS DEL FARAÓN EXPLICADO)
Va a haber un período de
abundancia en la tierra, seguido de una dura hambruna
Faraón está impresionado por José y hace
él su segundo al mando (PIEDRA EL CRUOS)
En Canaán, el futuro parece duro
La familia de Jacob lo encuentra difícil
recordando los buenos tiempos que una vez tuvieron
(ESOS DÍAS CANAAN). Decidir el no puede
viven de lo que tienen
Los hermanos van a Egipto a pedir comida
Aparecen antes de
Joseph y no lo reconozcas
José los hace gruñir
y luego acusa a Benjamin de robar
su preciosa copa de oro (¿QUIÉN ES EL LADRÓN?)
Los hermanos saltan a su defensa (BENJAMIN CALYPSO)
y José ve que son hombres cambiados
Se revela a sí mismo (JOSPEH TODO EL TIEMPO)
Todos se regocijan y Jacob es
feliz de reunirse con su amado hijo
(JACOB EN EGIPTO). José canta de sus sueños
una vez más y muestra una aún más fabulosa
technicolor dreamcoat
