Das helle Zischen von Wasserdampf
Erfüllt den achteren Raum
Die Hitze dringt bis zu meinem Stand
Schon ich ertrage sie kaum
Die rußigen Gestalten im Kesselraum
Klagen nach Luft und nach Licht
Sie schreien gequält wie im Fiebertraum
Bekommen doch beides nicht
Ich schließe die schwere Eisentür
Wend' mich den Turbinen zu
Zu meinem Schreck ist nichts zu spür'n
Im Maschinenraum Totenruh'
Heizer und Trimmer
Weinen und wimmern
Gleißendes Flimmern
Gleich einem Gewitter

Auf Backbord ein Schrapnelleinschuss
Der Panzer auf Luv ist durchsiebt
Tonne um Tonne Wassereinbruch
Die Lenzpumpe versagt ihren Dienst
Nitrosegas und Amatoldunst
Ätzen die Lungen zu Brei
Hab' nur ein Tuch vor meinem Mund
Und atme die Gase tief ein
Das Wasser steigt, der Kreuzer sinkt
Zehn Meter Tiefgang gen Heck
Die Brühe steht uns zum Kinn
Ich ertrink' mit dem Heizer Piquette

But they get neither
I close the heavy iron door
Turn to the turbines
To my shock, there's nothing to feel
In the engine room, it's dead quiet

The bilge pump fails to do its job
Nitro gas and fumes
Corrode the lungs to mush
I’ve got just a cloth over my mouth
And breathe in the gases deep
The water's rising, the cruiser sinks
Ten meters draft towards the stern
The muck's up to our chins
I’m drowning with the fireman Piquette
