In the Tavern When We Are

Carl Orff

In Taberna Quando Sumus

In taberna quando sumus
Non curamus quit sit humus
Sed ad ludum properamus
Cui semper insudamus
Quid agatur in taberna
Ubi nummus est pincerna
Hoc est opus ut queratur
Si quid loquar, audiatur

Quidam ludunt, quidam bibunt
Quidam indiscrete vivunt
Sed in ludo qui morantur
Ex his quidam denudantur
Quidam ibi vestiuntur
Quidam saccis induuntur
Ibi nullus timet mortem
Sed pro baccho mittunt sortem

Primo pro nummata vini
Ex hac bibunt libertini
Semel bibunt pro captivis
Post haec bibunt ter pro vivis
Quater pro christianis cunctis
Quinquies pro fidelibus defunctis
Sexies pro sororibus vanis
Septies pro militibus silvanis

Octies pro fratribus perversis
Nonies pro monachis dispersis
Decies pro navigantibus
Undecies pro discordantibus
Duodecies pro penitentibus
Tredecies pro iter agentibus
Tam pro papa quam pro rege
Bibunt omnes sine lege

Bibit hera, bibit herus
Bibit miles, bibit clerus
Bibit ille, bibit illa
Bibit servus, cum ancilla
Bibit velox, bibit piger
Bibit albus, bibit niger
Bibit constants, bibit vagus
Bibit rudis, bibit magus

Bibit pauper et egrotus
Bibit exul et ignotus
Bibit puer, bibit canus
Bibit presul et decanus
Bibit soror, bibit frater
Bibit anus, bibit mater
Bibit ista, bibit ille
Bibunt centum, bibunt mille

Parum sexcente nummate
Durant, cum immoderate
Bibunt omnes sine meta
Quamvis bibant mente leta
Sic nos rodunt omnes gentes
Et sic erimus egentes
Qui nos rodunt confundantur
Et cum iustis non scribantur

In the Tavern When We Are

In the tavern when we are
We don’t care who’s on the ground
But we rush to the game
To which we always sweat
What happens in the tavern
Where money is the bartender
This is the job to be sought
If I speak, let it be heard

Some play, some drink
Some live recklessly
But in the game who lingers
From these some get stripped
Some get dressed there
Some are dressed in sacks
There no one fears death
But for Bacchus, they cast lots

First for the money of wine
From this, the libertines drink
Once they drink for the captives
After this, they drink three times for the living
Four times for all Christians
Five times for the faithful departed
Six times for vain sisters
Seven times for woodland soldiers

Eight times for perverse brothers
Nine times for scattered monks
Ten times for sailors
Eleven times for those in discord
Twelve times for the penitent
Thirteen times for those on a journey
For the pope as well as the king
They all drink without law

The lady drinks, the lord drinks
The soldier drinks, the cleric drinks
He drinks, she drinks
The servant drinks, with the maid
The swift drinks, the slow drinks
The white drinks, the black drinks
The steady drinks, the wandering drinks
The unrefined drinks, the magician drinks

The poor and the sick drink
The exile and the unknown drink
The boy drinks, the old man drinks
The bishop and the dean drink
The sister drinks, the brother drinks
The old woman drinks, the mother drinks
This one drinks, that one drinks
They drink a hundred, they drink a thousand

A little over six hundred coins
Last, when they drink excessively
They all drink without a limit
Even if they drink with a merry mind
Thus, all nations mock us
And thus we will be needy
Those who mock us be confounded
And with the righteous not be written
