When we set out in our canoe, we thought it would be fun
We had sandwiches, a flask of tea and a great big bottle of rum
We sang and drank and laughed a lot or just drifted in the sun
But we would have turned back there and then if we knew what was to come

Some moron on a Jet Ski shot a spear gun through our boat
The water started pouring in, we didn't know if we'd float
The sun went in, the wind got up and the rain came pouring down
As I bailed out water with my hat, I thought that we would drown

And as the boat was going down, we saw a piece of land
An island in the distance, a pile of mud and sand
There was DEADri, there was Bet and me, but only room for two
I looked at them, they looked at me. Will it be me or you?

We found an old black plastic bag and stuffed it in the hole
It still let in some water but we hoped that it would hold
Bet lost the draw and paddled off and we knew her life would end
In a godforsaken seaside town the natives called Southend

Now all we do is sit here, taking in the sun
But I think that when the winter comes, it won't be so much fun
There's nothing to eat but seaweed and dead crabs that float by
If it wasn't quite so funny, I think that I might cry

Toen we vertrokken in onze kano, dachten we dat het leuk zou zijn
We hadden broodjes, een thermosfles thee en een grote fles rum bij ons
We zongen en dronken en lachten veel of dreven gewoon in de zon
Maar we zouden daar en dan zijn omgekeerd als we wisten wat er zou komen

Een of andere idioot op een Jetski schoot een harpoen door onze boot
Het water begon binnen te stromen, we wisten niet of we zouden drijven
De zon verdween, de wind nam toe en de regen kwam met bakken naar beneden
Terwijl ik water uit de boot schepte met mijn hoed, dacht ik dat we zouden verdrinken

En terwijl de boot zonk, zagen we een stuk land
Een eiland in de verte, een hoop modder en zand
Daar was DEADri, daar was Bet en ik, maar er was maar plek voor twee
Ik keek naar hen, zij keken naar mij. Wordt het mij of jou?

We vonden een oude zwarte plastic tas en stopten die in het gat
Het liet nog steeds wat water binnen, maar we hoopten dat het zou houden
Bet verloor de loting en peddelde weg en we wisten dat haar leven zou eindigen
In een verdoemd kustplaatsje dat de inboorlingen Southend noemden

Nu zitten we hier gewoon, te genieten van de zon
Maar ik denk dat als de winter komt, het niet zo leuk zal zijn
Er is niets te eten behalve zeewier en dode krabben die voorbij drijven
Als het niet zo grappig was, denk ik dat ik zou kunnen huilen
