happy new year everybody
happy birthday country joe
i resolve to do like i always do
theres an overweight man with an overweight woman on a sofa just watching tv
hes yelling his opinion at the television she looks up from her food and agrees
they got two bumper stickers on there pick up truck
they keep the pick up parked outside
one sticker says "what would jesus do?"
the other bumper sticker says "power of pride"
i was thumbing through the stations on my own television
when i came across a guy on the religous station
singing "somebodys coming" sounding whiter than me somehow
wow
it took me back in time thru dwindling joy
to when i was such a guilt ridden catholic boy
im evangelical agnostic now
i dont know what we're doing here
you don't "KNOW" what were doing here
now christians dont walk out on me just yet
you know whose name im yelling as im clutching my chest
the one my dad told me to and his told him to
and i probably pray as much or more than you do
believe? shit, every word i sing
but believing and knowing, those are two different things
and if your trying to change the way a strangers life will have to go
i believe this is where i wanna stick to what i know
which is nothing you know, nothing for sure so
just chill til the next episode
now back to the lecture at hand
seems like my neighbor wants to kill what he cant understand
i say we cant just kill what we dont understand
but i turn on my tv and see that oh yes we can
we can and we have since then dawn of man
for countless gods whose only real seeming plan
was to see to it that clinging to life was our fate
and you gotta admit that lifes pretty great
but
can we deny that its killing us?

Resuelvo hacer como siempre hago
hay un hombre con sobrepeso y una mujer con sobrepeso en un sofá viendo la televisión
él grita su opinión a la televisión, ella levanta la vista de su comida y está de acuerdo
tienen dos calcomanías en su camioneta
mantienen la camioneta estacionada afuera
una calcomanía dice '¿qué haría Jesús?'
la otra calcomanía dice 'poder del orgullo'
estaba pasando por los canales en mi propia televisión
cuando me encontré con un tipo en la estación religiosa
cantando 'alguien viene' sonando más blanco que yo de alguna manera
wow
me llevó de vuelta en el tiempo a través de la alegría menguante
a cuando era un chico católico tan cargado de culpa
ahora soy evangélico agnóstico
no sé qué estamos haciendo aquí
tú no 'SABES' qué estamos haciendo aquí
ahora cristianos no se vayan todavía
sabes el nombre que estoy gritando mientras me agarro el pecho
el que mi papá me dijo y él le dijo a él
y probablemente rezo tanto o más que tú
¿creer? mierda, cada palabra que canto
pero creer y saber, esas son dos cosas diferentes
y si estás tratando de cambiar el rumbo de la vida de un extraño
creo que aquí es donde quiero aferrarme a lo que sé
que es nada que sepas, nada seguro así que
solo relájate hasta el próximo episodio
ahora de vuelta a la lección en cuestión
parece que mi vecino quiere matar lo que no puede entender
digo que no podemos simplemente matar lo que no entendemos
pero enciendo mi televisión y veo que oh sí podemos
podemos y lo hemos hecho desde el amanecer del hombre
por incontables dioses cuyo único plan aparente
era asegurarse de que aferrarse a la vida fuera nuestro destino
y tienes que admitir que la vida es bastante genial
pero
¿podemos negar que nos está matando?

no te estoy lastimando
si la vida es algo, es embarazosa
un clavo oxidado a través de un zapato descuidado
no puedes evitar sentarte y preguntarte a veces
por qué nunca hay nada que el pobre clavo pueda hacer
o pensar en lo injusto que es
que el zapato solo va a donde también tiene que ir
si no eres el niño tonto corriendo por ahí
más bien tienes que hacer lo que naciste para hacer
