Na fazenda onde nasci, ali mesmo fui criado
Na escolinha da fazenda onde fui matriculado
A filha do meu patrão sentava ali do meu lado
Juramos de nos casar e um do outro ser amado
Eu era bom empregado, querido do fazendeiro
Aprendi lidar com gado, meu serviço era campeiro
Um cachorro policial eu tinha por companheiro
Que na hora do perigo o cão chegava primeiro
Pedi ela em casamento, o velho disse que sim
No dia do matrimônio, que dia lindo pra mim
Morar em casa bonita, na frente um lindo jardim
E ter a mulher mais linda pra viver junto de mim
Um dia a mulher me disse, escute o que eu digo agora
Não quero mais o cachorro na casa que a gente mora
Vai ter que matar o cão se não quer que eu vá embora
Chamei o pobre cachorro pra matar na mesma hora
Eu peguei minha canoa, o cachorro acompanhou
Ao passar na correnteza minha canoa virou
O meu sentido sumiu porque a água me afogou
Estava quase morrendo o cachorro me salvou
Eu ia matar o cão como se fosse inimigo
Mas foi ele quem salvou-me daquele triste perigo
Hoje em dia sou feliz e com alegria digo
Tenho uma mulher amada, também um cachorro amigo

I took my canoe, the dog followed
As we passed through the current, my canoe overturned
I lost my senses because the water drowned me
I was almost dying, the dog saved me
I was going to kill the dog as if he were an enemy
But it was he who saved me from that sad danger
Today I am happy and with joy I say
I have a beloved woman, and also a friend dog
