The Things I Still Remember
G. Govastki
I miss the scent of cake
Still warm inside the room
The sunlight on the table
The roses just in bloom
I miss those days of wind
That wandered through the trees
The curtains softly dancing
The world at such a ease
I miss the gentle voices
That once were close to mine
Some faded into silence
But never out of time
I carry them within me
The things I can't reclaim
A blanket soft as morning
A voice that spoke my name
And though the years keep turning
And take the past away
Some memories stay breathing
Inside the heart each day
I miss the quiet evenings
The shadows on the wall
The sound of distant footsteps
The comfort of it all
I miss the hands that held me
The laughter down the hall
The little, simple moments
I never knew I'd miss at all
If time could leave one doorway
Back into those old days
I'd stand beneath the window
And let the silence play
I carry them within me
The things I can't reclaim
A blanket soft as morning
A voice that spoke my name
And though the years keep turning
And take the past away
Some memories stay breathing
Inside the heart each day
The scent of cake still lingers
The wind still knows my name
And somewhere in the quiet
The past comes home again
