La fleur des bois poussait sauvage à la ferme,The wildwood flower grew wild on the farm,
Et on ne savait jamais comment elle s'appelait.And we never knowed what it was called.
Certains disaient que c'était une fleur et d'autres que c'était de l'herbe,Some said it was a flower and some said it was weed,
Je n'y ai jamais vraiment pensé ......I never gave it much thought ......
Un jour, j'étais là à parler avec mon frère,One day I was out there talking to my brother,

J'ai tendu la main pour mâcher une herbe,Reached down for a weed to chew on,
Les choses sont devenues floues et brouillées,Things got fuzzy and things got blurry,
Et puis tout a disparu !And then everything was gone!

Mais je savais que c'était mieux que de renifler du jute.But I knew it beat the hell out of sniffin' burlap.

Je reprends mes esprits et mon frère était là,I come to and my brother was there,
Et il a dit, Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas avec tes yeux ?And he said, What's wrong with your eyes?
J'ai dit, Je ne sais pas, je mâchais une herbe.I said, I don't know, I was chewing on a weed.
Il a dit, Laisse-moi essayer.He said, Let me give it a try.
On a passé le reste de la journée et la plupart de la nuit,We spent the rest of that day and most of that night,
À essayer de retrouver mon frère, Bill.Trying to find my brother, Bill.
On l'a retrouvé, vers six heures du matin,Caught up with him, 'bout six o'clock the next morning,
Nu, se balançant sur le moulin à vent !Naked, swinging on the wind mill!

Il était à moitié fou .....He was about half crazy .....

Le lendemain, on a ramassé plein de ces herbes,The very next day we picked a bunch of them weeds,
Et on les a mises au soleil pour les faire sécher.And put 'em in the sun to dry.
Puis on les a écrasées et hachées,Then we mashed 'em up and chopped 'em up,
Et on les a mises dans la pipe en épi de maïs.And put 'em in the corncob pipe.
Fumer cette fleur des bois est devenu une habitude,Smokin' that wildwood flower got to be a habit,
On ne voyait pas de mal.We didn't see no harm.
On pensait que c'était plutôt pratique,We thought it was kind of handy,
Faire un voyage sans jamais quitter la ferme !Take a trip and never leave the farm!

Toutes les bonnes choses doivent prendre fin,All good things gotta come to an end,
Et c'est pareil pour l'herbe des bois.And it's the same with the wildwood weed.
Un jour, un type de Washington est passé,One day this feller from Washington came by,
Et il l'a repérée et est devenu blanc comme un drap.And he spied it and turned white as a sheet.
Puis ils ont creusé et brûlé,Then they dug and they burned,
Et ils ont brûlé et creusé,And they burned and they dug,
Et ils ont tué toutes nos jolies petites herbes.And they killed all our cute little weeds.
Puis ils sont partis,Then they drove away,
On a juste souri et fait un signe ..........We just smiled and waved ..........
Assis là sur ce sac de graines !Sittin' there on that sack of seeds!
