Het is vier uur 's ochtendsIt's four the morning
het einde van decemberthe end of December
Ik schrijf je nu, om te zien of het beter met je gaatI'm writing you now, to see if you're better
New York was koud, maar ik hou van waar ik woonNew York was cold, but I like where I'm living
Er is muziek op Clinton Street de hele avond doorThere's music on Clinton Street all through the evening
Ik hoor dat je aan het bouwen bentI hear that you're building
daar je kleine huisyour little house
diep in de woestijndeep in the desert
Je leeft voor niets, maarYou're living for nothing, though
ik hoop dat je een soort van verslag bijhoudt, ja.I hope you're keeping some kind of record, yes.
Jane kwam langs met een lok van je hierJane came by with a lock of you here
ze zei dat je het aan haar gafshe said that you gave it to her
op de nacht dat je van plan was om te vertrekkenon the night that you planned to clear
Ben je ooit echt vertrokken?Did you ever go clear?
De laatste keer dat ik je zagLast time I saw you
zag je er zoveel ouder uityou looked so much older
de beroemde blauwe regenjasyour famous blue raincoat
verscheurd bij de schoudertorn at the shoulder
ging naar het stationwent to the station
dat elke trein verwelkomdeto meet every train
je kwam alleen thuis zonder Lily Marleneyou came home alone without Lily Marlen
Je behandelde mijn vrouw als een schim van je levenYou treated my woman like a flake of your life
en toen ze terugkwamand when she came back
was ze van niemand, noushe was nobody's wife, well
Ik zie je daar met een roos tussen je tandenI see you there with a rose in your teeth
slechts nog een dunne zigeuner diefjut one more thin gipsy thief
oh, Jane is nu wakkeroh, Jane's awake now
Ze stuurt haar groeten. She sends her regards.
Wat kan ik je vertellenWhat can I tell you
mijn broer, mijn moordenaarmy brother, my killer
wat kan ik in hemelsnaam zeggenwhat can I possibly say
Ik denk dat ik je misI guess that I miss you
Ik denk dat ik je vergeefI guess I forgive you
Ik ben blij dat je in mijn weg stondI'm glad you stood in my way
Als je ooit hier langs komtIf you ever come by here
voor Jane of voor mijfor Jane or for me
Nou, je bent een leger dat nu slaaptWell, you're an army sleeping now
en je vrouw is vrij, nouand your woman is free, well
Bedankt voor de moeite die je nam uit haar ogenThanks for the trouble you took from her eyes
Ik dacht dat het daar wasI thought it was there
voor goedfor good
dus heb ik het nooit geprobeerdso I never tried
En Jane kwam langs met een lok van je hierAnd Jane came by with a lock of you here
Ze zei dat ze het aan haar gafShe said that she gave it to her
op de nacht dat je van plan was om te vertrekkenon the night that you planned to clear
