Spancil Hill

Spancil Hill

Letzte Nacht, als ich träumteLast night as I lay dreamin'
Von schönen Tagen, die vergangen sindOf pleasant days gone by
Mein Geist war ganz auf ReisenMe mind bein' bent on travelin'
Nach Irland flog ich geschwindTo Ireland I did fly
Ich trat ein in eine VisionI stepped aboard a vision
Und folgte meinem Willenand followed with my will
Bis ich schließlich ankerte'Til next I came to anchor
Am Kreuzweg bei Spancil HillAt the cross near Spancil Hill

Erfreut von der NeuheitDelighted by the novelty
Verzaubert von der SzenerieEnchanted with the scene
Wo in meiner frühen KindheitWhere in my early boyhood
Ich oft gewesen binWhere often I had been
Ich glaubte, ein Murmeln zu hörenI thought I heard a murmur
Und denke, ich höre es nochAnd think I hear it still
Es ist der kleine WasserlaufIt's the little stream of water
Der hinunterfließt bei Spancil HillThat flows down Spancil Hill

Es war der 23. JuniIt being the 23rd of June
Der Tag vor dem FestThe day before the fair
Wo Irlands Söhne und TöchterWhere Ireland's sons and daughters
In Massen versammelt sindIn crowds assembled there
Die Jungen, die Alten, die Tapferen und die KühnenThe young, the old, the brave and the bold
Sie kamen zum Spaß und zum JagenThey came for sport and kill
Es gab fröhliche GesprächeThere were jovial conversations
Am Kreuzweg bei Spancil HillAt the cross near Spancil Hill

Ich ging, um meine Nachbarn zu sehenI went to see my neighbours
Um zu hören, was sie sagen könntenTo hear what they might say
Die Alten waren alle tot und fortThe old ones were all dead and gone
Die anderen wurden grauThe others turning grey
Ich traf den Schneider QuigleyI met with tailor Quigley
Er ist noch so mutig wie eh und jeHe's as bold as ever still
Er machte mir meine HosenSure he used to make my britches
Als ich in Spancil Hill lebteWhen I lived in Spancil Hill

Ich machte einen kurzen BesuchI paid a flying visit
Bei meiner ersten und einzigen LiebeTo my first and only love
Sie ist weiß wie eine LilieShe's white as any lily
Und sanft wie eine TaubeAnd gentle as a dove
Sie schlang ihre Arme um michShe threw her arms around me
Und sagte: Johnny, ich liebe dich nochSaying Johnny I love you still
Sie ist Meg, die Tochter des BauernShe's Meg the farmers daughter
Und der Stolz von Spancil HillAnd the pride of Spancil Hill

Ich träumte, ich beugte mich und küsste sieI dreamt I stooped and kissed her
Wie an dem Tag zuvorAs in the day of 'ore
Sie sagte: Johnny, du machst nur SpaßShe said Johnny you're only joking
Wie so oft zuvorAs many the times before
Der Hahn krähte am MorgenThe cock crew in the morn'
Er krähte laut und schrillHe crew both loud and shrill
Und ich wachte in Kalifornien aufAnd I woke in California
