祭夜絵巻 (matsuriyo emaki)

When the crimson sun begins to set
紅き陽が傾いてゆく頃合いに
akaki hi ga katamuite yuku koroai ni
My heart flutters to the sound of the flute carried by the wind
風に乗る笛の音に浮き足立つ思い
kaze ni noru fue no ne ni uki adatsu omoi
Tonight is the night of the festival, forgetting the sorrowful world
今宵は祭りの夜、憂き世を忘れて
koyoi wa matsuri no yoru, ukiyo wo wasurete
Isn't it nice to smile, in this fleeting dream
笑うのもいいじゃないか、泡沫の夢
warau no mo ii ja nai ka, utakata no yume

Guiding my hesitant steps through the crowd
迷う手を引いて人波を
mayou te wo hiite hitonami wo
As I walk unsteadily, it feels strangely amusing
そぞろ歩いてみればいとおかし
sozoro aruite mireba ito okashi
The clattering sound of the geta sandals
鳴らす下駄の音カランコロン
narasu geta no oto karankoron
Is also quite stylish
これもまた小粋かな
kore mo mata koiki kana

Shall we go! Making noise is the elegance of the banquet
参ろうか! 騒いでこそが宴の風流
mairou ka! sawaide koso ga utage no furyū
Let's enjoy the poetic beauty of flowers and birds
花鳥諷詠愛でよう
kachō fūei medeyō
Let's go! Mastering pleasures is tradition
いざ参ろうか! 道楽も極めれば伝統
iza mairou ka! dōraku mo kiwamereba dentō
Unrestrained in every way
古今東西無礼講
kokon tozai bureikō
Form a circle!
輪になって!
wa ni natte!

さぁ、舞い踊れ!
saa, maiodore!

Sometimes you learn by letting loose
羽目を外して知ることもあるだろう
hame wo hazushite shiru koto mo aru darou
Leave behind what doesn't go well in the twilight
上手くいかないことも宵闇に置いておいて
umaku ikanai koto mo yoiyami ni oite oite
If the festival music resounds tonight
今宵の祭り囃子、響いてきたなら
koyoi no matsuri bayashi, hibiite kita nara
Why not enjoy it, in this momentary dream
楽しめばいいじゃないか、一時の夢譚
tanoshimeba ii ja nai ka, hitotoki no yume tan

Among the crowd dressed up and stylish
着飾り洒落込む人波の
kikazari sharekomu hitonami no
The natural smiles are so charming
有りの儘の笑顔がいとゆかし
ari no mama no egao ga ito yukashi
Someone hums a tune, chintonsan
誰か口ずさむチントンシャン
dareka kuchizusamu chintonshan
That too is elegant
それもまた雅かな
sore mo mata miyabi kana

Let's go! Making noise is the etiquette of the feast
いざ参ろうか! 騒いでこそが宴の礼節
iza mairou ka! sawaide koso ga utage no reisetsu
Illuminated by the moonlight
月明かりに照らされて
tsukiakari ni terasarete
Let's go! Pleasures are the treasures of this world
いざ参ろうか! 道楽こそ現世の宝
iza mairou ka! dōraku koso gensei no takara
Enjoy the poetry, music, and instruments
詩歌管弦に興を尽くせ
shika kangengaku ni kyō wo tsukuse

Dance with flowers, sing with birds, compose with the wind, admire the moon
花と舞い、鳥と歌い、風を詠み、月を愛でて
hana to mai, tori to utai, kaze wo yomi, tsuki wo medete
Dance with stars, sing with rainbows, recite time, love dreams
星と舞い、虹と歌い、時を詠み、夢を愛で
hoshi to mai, niji to utai, toki wo yomi, yume wo mede
