mā kān bil khāṭir walā marra ʿamalit ḥisāb
You break a promise, leave a heart that loved you true
تكسر وعد تهجر قلب حَبّك بكل إخلاص
takassar waʿd tahjur qalb ḥabbak bikul ikhlāṣ
You leave me halfway, just up and go without a reason
تتركني بربع الدرب ،، ترحل بلا أسباب
tatrukni birubaʿ al-darb, tarḥal bilā asbāb
You open my wounds, oh how the people laugh at me
تفتّح جروحي يا أسف شمّتت فيي الناس
tafattāḥ jurūḥi yā ʾasaf shammatt fīy al-nās

يلي اشتريتك بعتني
yalli ishtaraytik baʿtanī

taḥlam yalli mitli yinhani

تعمى العين قبل ما

إبقي حكيلهن عنّنا
ibqī ḥakīl hun ʿannā

ويلي غيّر دروبو
waylli ghayyir durūbū
Loved the thorns and left the roses
حبّ الشّوك وترك الورد
ḥubb al-shawk wa-tarak al-ward
And the one who stripped his clothes
ويلّي شلح توبو
waylli shalaḥ ṭūbū
To feel the cold gnawing at his bones
لينهش من عظامو البرد
linahish min ʿiẓāmū al-bard
And I, who used to adore you
وأنا يلّي كنت احواك
wa-anā yalli kunt aḥwāk
Am worth less than you
يسواني مايسواك
yiswānī mā yiswāk
Inside you are the flaws of the world
جوّاتك عيوب الدّني
jawwātak ʿuyūb al-dunyā
And despite the flaws, I love you
ورغم العيوب أهواك

بعد ما عاهدوني خَلّوا
baʿd mā ʿāhadūnī khallū
And the spirit reached out to Damascus, crying
ووصّل للشام الرّوح عنينها
wa-waṣṣal lil-shām al-rūḥ ʿanīnuhā

يامهاجرين القلب خَلّوا
yā muhājirīn al-qalb khallū
A picture that brings us together and comforts us
صورة تجمعنا وتواسينا
ṣūrah tajmaʿnā wa-tawāsīnā
They made me drink the bitter life and left
سقوني مُرّ العمر وخَلّو
saqūnī murr al-ʿumr wa-khallū
May God repay them for making our eyes weep.
الله يجازيهم بَكّوا عينينا
allāh yajzīhim bakkū ʿaynaynā
