What It Was, Was Football

C'était en octobre dernier, je crois.It was back last October, I believe it was.
On allait tenir un service sous tente dans cette ville universitaire,We was going to hold a tent service off at this college town,
et on est arrivés vers l'heure du dîner un samedi.and we got there about dinner time on Saturday.
Chacun de nous pensait qu'on devrait se prendre un petit quelque chose à manger avant de monter la tente.Different ones of us thought that we ought to get us a mouthful to eat before we set up the tent.
Alors on est sortis du camion et on a suivi un petit groupe de gensSo we got off the truck and followed this little bunch of people
à travers un petit coin de forêt,through this small little bitty patch of woods there,
et on est tombés sur un grand panneau qui disait : "Prenez quelque chose à manger ici."and we came up on a big sign that says, "Get something to Eat Here."

Je suis allé prendre deux hot-dogs et une grande boisson orange,I went up and got me two hot dogs and a big orange drink,
et avant que je puisse prendre une bouchée de cette nourriture,and before I could take a mouthful of that food,
une foule de gens s'est agglutinée autour de moi et m'a empêché de manger,this whole raft of people come up around me and got me to where I couldn't eat nothing, up like,
et j'ai renversé ma grande boisson orange.and I dropped my big orange drink.
Eh bien, les amis, ils ont commencé à avancer, et je n'avais pas d'autre choix que de les suivre.Well, friends, they commenced to move, and there wasn't so much that I could do but move with them.

Eh bien, on a commencé à passer par toutes sortes de portes et de grilles, je ne sais pas quoi d'autre,Well, we commenced to go through all kinds of doors and gates and I don't know what- all,
et j'ai levé les yeux sur l'une d'elles et ça disait : "Porte Nord."and I looked up over one of 'em and it says, "North Gate."
On a continué à avancer, et bientôt on est tombés sur un jeune garçon qui a dit,We kept on a-going through there, and pretty soon we come up on a young boy and he says,
"Billet, s'il vous plaît.""Ticket, please."
Et j'ai dit, "Mon pote, je n'ai pas de billet ;And I says, "Friend, I don't have a ticket;
je ne sais même pas où je vais !"I don't even know where it is that I'm a-going!"
Eh bien, il a dit, "Sortez aussi vite que vous pouvez."Well, he says, "Come on out as quick as you can."
Et j'ai dit, "D'accord ; je ferai demi-tour dès que j'en aurai l'occasion."And I says, "I'll do 'er; I'll turn right around the first chance I get."

Eh bien, on a continué à avancer,Well, we kept on a-moving through there,
et bientôt tout le monde a su où il allait,and pretty soon everybody got where it was that they was a-going,
parce qu'ils se sont séparés et j'ai pu voir correctement.because they parted and I could see pretty good.
Et ce que j'ai vu, c'était cette foule de gens assis sur ces deux rivesAnd what I seen was this whole raft of people a-sittin' on these two banks
et se regardant à travers ce joli petit pré vert.and a-lookin at one another across this pretty little green cow pasture.

Quelqu'un avait tracé des lignes blanches partout et planté des poteaux,Somebody had took and drawed white lines all over it and drove posts in it,
et je ne sais pas quoi d'autre,and I don't know what all,
et j'ai regardé là-bas et j'ai vu cinq ou six détenus courir de haut en basand I looked down there and I seen five or six convicts a running up and down
et faire retentir des sifflets.and a-blowing whistles .
Et puis j'ai regardé là-bas et j'ai vu ces jolies filles portant de petites robes courtesAnd then I looked down there and I seen these pretty girls wearin' these little bitty short dresses
et dansant autour, alors j'ai pensé que j'allais m'asseoir et voir ce qui allait se passer.and a-dancing around, and so I thought I'd sit down and see what it was that was a-going to happen.

À peine que je me suis bien installé, j'ai vu là-basAbout the time I got set down good I looked down there
trente ou quarante hommes sortir en courant d'un grand outhouse là-basand I seen thirty or forty men come a-runnin' out of one end of a great big outhouse down there
et tout le monde où j'étais assis s'est levé et a crié !and everybody where I was a-settin' got up and hollered!
Et j'ai demandé à ce gars qui était assis à côté de moi,And I asked this fella that was a sittin' beside of me,
"Mon pote, pourquoi est-ce qu'ils crient ?""Friend, what is it that they're a-hollerin' for?
Eh bien, il m'a donné une tape dans le dos et il a dit,Well, he whopped me on the back and he says,
"Mon pote, prends un verre !" J'ai dit,"Buddy, have a drink!" I says,
"Eh bien, je crois que je vais prendre une autre grande orange."Well, I believe I will have another big orange.
Je l'ai pris et je me suis rassis.I got it and set back down.

Quand je suis revenu, j'ai vu que les hommes s'étaient regroupés en deux petits groupes très proches,When I got there again I seen that the men had got in two little bitty bunches down there
et ils ont voté.real close together, and they voted.
Ils ont élu un homme chacun,They elected one man apiece,
et ces deux hommes sont sortis au milieu de ce préand them two men come out in the middle of that cow pasture
et se sont serré la main comme s'ils ne s'étaient pas vus depuis longtemps.and shook hands like they hadn't seen one another in a long time.
Puis un détenu est venu là où ils se tenaient,Then a convict came over to where they was a-standin',
et il a sorti un quart et ils ont commencé à tirer au sort juste là !and he took out a quarter and they commenced to odd man right there!
Après un moment, j'ai compris pourquoi ils tiraient au sort.After a while I seen what it was they was odd-manning for.
C'était que les deux groupes voulaient ce drôle de petit potiron pour jouer.It was that both bunchesfull of them wanted this funny lookin little pumpkin to play with.
Et je sais, les amis, qu'ils ne pouvaient pas le manger parce qu'ils l'ont botté toute la soiréeAnd I know, friends, that they couldn't eat it because they kicked it the whole evenin'
et il n'a jamais éclaté.and it never busted.

Les deux groupes voulaient ce truc.Both bunchesful wanted that thing.
Un groupe l'a eu et ça a rendu l'autre groupe aussi furieux qu'il pouvait l'être !One bunch got it and it made the other bunch just as mad as they could be!
Les amis, j'ai vu ce soir-là la plus terrible bagarre que j'ai jamais vue de ma vie !!Friends, I seen that evenin' the awfulest fight that I ever have seen in all my life !!
Ils couraient les uns vers les autres et se donnaient des coups de piedThey would run at one -another and kick one- another
et se jetaient au sol et se piétinaientand throw one another down and stomp on one another
et se frottaient les pieds les uns contre les autresand grind their feet in one another
et je ne sais pas quoi d'autre -and I don't know what-
et aussi vite qu'un d'eux se blessait,all and just as fast as one of 'em would get hurt,
il l'emportaient et en faisaient entrer un autre !!they'd take him off and run another one on !!

Eh bien, ils ont fait ça aussi longtemps que je suis resté là, mais bientôt ce garçon qui avait ditWell, they done that as long as I set there, but pretty soon this boy that had said
"Billet, s'il vous plaît." est venu me voir et a dit,"Ticket, please." He come up to me and said,
"Mon pote, tu vas devoir partir parce que tu n'as pas de billet.""Friend, you're gonna have to leave because it is that you don't have a ticket."
Et j'ai dit, "Eh bien, d'accord." Et je me suis levé et je suis parti.And I says, "Well, all right." And I got up and left.

Je ne sais pas, les amis, jusqu'à ce jour, ce qu'ils faisaient là-bas,I don't know friends, to this day, what it was that they was a doin' down there,
mais j'y ai réfléchi.but I have studied about it.
Je pense que c'était une sorte de concours où ils voient quel groupe de ces hommes peut prendre ce potiron et courir d'une extrémité de ce pré à l'autre sans se faire renverser ou marcher dans quelque chose.I think it was that it's some kindly of a contest where they see which bunchful of them men can take that pumpkin and run from one end of that cow pasture to the other without gettin' knocked down or steppin' in somethin'.
