River of the Birds

Río de los Pájaros

Uruguay's not a riverEl Uruguay no es un río
It's a blue sky on the moveEs un cielo azul que viaja
Painter of clouds on the roadPintor de nubes camino
With a taste of sweet honeydewCon sabor a mieles ruanas

The loves along the coastLos amores de la costa
Are loves without a goalSon amores sin destino
Water hyacinths of hopeCamalotes de esperanza
That the river carries awayQue se va llevando el río

Chua, chua, chua, ha, ha, haChua, chua, chua, ja, ja, ja
Don't sing anymore, little torcazaNo cantes más torcacita
For the ceibal cries bloodQue llora sangre el ceibal

Little brown washerwomanMorenita lavandera
Little bird from the coastBiguacita de la costa
Roll up your skirtEnróllate la pollera
Get to washing the clothesPonete a lavar la ropa

Your mother cooks jerkyTu madre cocina charqui
Your father went upstreamTu padre fue río arriba
And you’re left all aloneY vos te quedaste sola
Washing clothes by the shoreLavando ropa en la orilla

Chua, chua, chua, ha, ha, haChua, chua, chua ja ja ja
Don't sing anymore, little torcazaNo cantes más torcacita
For the ceibal cries bloodQue llora sangre el ceibal

Little fishing canoeCanoíta pescadora
Hold on through the stormAguantame el temporal
If my arms don’t tireSi mis brazos no se cansan
I’ll row you to safetyRemando te he de sacar
