I can remember the night oh so well.
The way the moon shone down on the Mississippi river swell.
Not a soul out there could have known.
Just how quick and fast that fog would come down

In the middle of a silent night
Heard that whistle blow

Was the wrong place at the wrong time
Now the tracks are bent out of line

Was the first mate on the foredeck
Ran my ship aground

Now the train had just left the station in New Orleans
'Bout the same time we hit the bridge at two fifteen
I can still hear the twisting metal cry
As a broken track threw the train off the line

I know I'll never find any kind of peace of mind, oh but you can rest assured
I will always remember the sound of that whistle blow
