I sang by the farmer's gateJag sjöng vid bondens knut
-Now summer's finally here-Nu är sommaren här
-It’s the end of spring, you see-Det är våren som är slut
The farmer replies so clearsvarar bonden så tvär
-Deep froze the ground up north-Djupt gick tjälen här i nord

I sang for the merchant manJag sjöng för handelsman
As he stood in his shop:där han stod i butik:
-Look, your shore is blooming now-Se, nu blommar ju din strand
And your bay's a sparkling drop!och nu glittrar din vik!
But he answered gruffly:Men han svarade burdus:
-Yeah, you’re lost in your cheer,-Ja du går i glädjerus,
But war and politics bring pain and sorrow near!men se krig och politik drar nöd och sorg till mitt hus!

Then I walked down to the shore,Då gick jag ner till strand,
Where the boat was tied up tight.där låg skutan förtöjd.
-Hello there, sailor friend!-Se goddag på dig, sjöman!
Do you hear the birds in flight?Hör du fåglarnas fröjd?
Cuckoos call out here on landGökar gala här i land
Under the sun’s fierce brand!under solens höga brand!
