Fui a la feria de contratación para vender mi trabajo,I went down to the hiring fair for to sell my labour,
Y noté a una doncella en la fila de al lado y esperaba que fuera mi vecina.And I noticed a maid in the very next row and I hoped she'd be my neighbour.
Imagina entonces mi alegría cuando el granjero nos eligió a ambos.Imagine then my delight when the farmer picked us both.
No dije una palabra en el carro hacia la granja, pero mi corazón latía en mi garganta.I spoke not a word in the cart to the farm, but my heart beat in my throat.

Mi alojamiento era seco y mi amo justo y le di toda mi medida,My lodging was dry and my master fair and I gave him full measure,
Pero mi envidia crecía como el maíz en el campo porque en su casa estaba mi tesoro,But my envy grew like the corn in the field for in his house was my treasure,
Y la veía llevar agua, o llevar las vacas del establo,And I'd watch her carry water, or drive cows from the byre,
Y el calor del sol hacía crecer fuerte al maíz y con él mi deseo.And the heat from the sun made the corn grow strong and with it my desire.

Pero llegó finalmente la época de la cosecha, tan pesada era la tareaBut harvest time it came at last, so heavy was the task
Que las mujeres y los hombres trabajaban lado a lado y finalmente la tuve cerca,That the women and the men worked side by side and I had her near at last,

Y yo golpeaba más fuerte con mi guadaña, pocas palabras entre nosotros pasaban,And I swung harder with my scythe, few words between us passed,
Y maldecía mi timidez y esperaba que ella escuchara mi corazón.And I cursed my tongue-tied youthfulness and I hoped that she'd hear my heart.
