The old ones are embarrassed childrenLos viejos son niños avergonzados
who return to the square to seek the sunque a la plaza vuelven a buscar el sol
and entertain a group of pigeonsy entretienen a un grupo de palomas
while life passes by.mientras pasa la vida alrededor.

The old ones walk, wandering the pathsLos viejos van, andando las veredas
contemplating the winter to come,meditando el invierno que vendrá,
delaying their steps until nightfalldemorando el paso hasta que anochezca
to return home without bothering anyone...y así volver a casa sin molestar…

And they know that life is not so longY saben que la vida no es tan larga
and they look at the future backwards...y miran el futuro para atrás…
the old ones are afraid of their truth.los viejos tienen miedo a su verdad

The old ones are the lifeLos viejos son la vida
escaping leaning on a cane,que se escapa apoyada en un bastón,
the old ones are a herd in retreatlos viejos son manada en retirada
from the mirror and the clock...del espejo y del reloj…
and they feel a taste in their mouthy sienten en la boca un sabor que les provoca
that makes them say that the past time was betterdecir que el tiempo de antes fue mejor
and they keep the sadness... in their hearts.y guardan la tristeza… en el corazón…

The old ones are transparent silhouettes,Los viejos son siluetas transparentes,
distant gaze, prophets of goodbyemirada ausente, profetas del adiós
who go to church to pray softlyque a la iglesia van a rezar despacito
so that only the Lord can hear.para que escuche solamente el señor.

They keep in yellowed papers,Ellos guardan en papeles amarillos,
commitments that time retired...compromisos que el tiempo jubiló…
and they line up, to receive crumbsy hacen fila, para recibir migajas
that the country gives back to them, please.que la patria les devuelve por favor

And they know that life is not so longY saben que la vida no es tan larga
